We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Stephanie Mason. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Stephanie below.
Stephanie, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
The source of my resilience stems from the remarkable role models of my upbringing: my mother, grandmother, and sister. These three exceptional women have exemplified the idea that, no matter the challenges I encounter, I hold the power to shape the outcome of my life. Their teachings have instilled in me the importance of perseverance and maintaining a positive perspective.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As an entrepreneur, I launched a soap business called Royal Oils, in collaboration with my children. Our company is based in Chicago, Illinois. We specialize in crafting handcrafted natural, vegan, and nut-free soap, body oil, and various other body care products.
Initially, I started this venture as a hobby with the intention of offering my children products that contained fewer chemicals. However, this hobby quickly transformed into a true passion. I developed a deep desire to make natural products more accessible to others, promoting their benefits for both our bodies and the environment.
One of the most rewarding aspects of running this business is the opportunity to work alongside my children. Not only do we create fantastic products together, but I also have the privilege of teaching them valuable lessons about entrepreneurship. Through firsthand experience, they witness the dedication, hard work, and determination required to operate a successful business.
It brings me immense joy to see my passion merge with the opportunity to bond and educate my children. Together, we are building a brand that promotes natural, sustainable, and mindful living, while empowering future generations to appreciate and engage in the world of business.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey, I believe there were three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that had the most significant impact:
1. Persistence: The ability to persevere through challenges and setbacks is crucial. In the face of obstacles, it’s essential to stay determined and keep pushing forward. My advice for those early in their journey is to cultivate resilience, to embrace failure as a learning opportunity, and to never give up on their dreams.
2. Continuous Learning: Being open to acquiring new knowledge and skills is essential for growth. In my experience, continuously seeking knowledge and staying curious has allowed me to adapt to changing circumstances and make informed decisions. Early on, I encourage individuals to prioritize learning, whether through formal education, mentorship, or self-study. Embrace lifelong learning as a habit to stay adaptable and keep evolving.
3. Networking and Building Relationships: Building a strong network and cultivating relationships can greatly contribute to your journey. Connect with like-minded individuals, mentors, and industry professionals who can provide guidance, support, and opportunities. Actively participate in communities, attend events, and engage in conversations that can widen your circle and bring new perspectives. Nurture these relationships by offering support, collaboration, and creating a genuine connection.
For those starting their journey, my advice is to embrace these qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge. Be persistent in pursuing your goals, continue learning to stay ahead, and invest time in building meaningful relationships. Remember that success is a marathon, not a sprint, so stay focused, remain patient, and enjoy the journey as it unfolds.
How would you describe your ideal client?
An ideal client for me would possess the following characteristics:
1. Genuine Interest in Natural Ingredients: They value using products with natural ingredients and understand the benefits they provide. They seek out products that are free from harmful chemicals and prioritize taking care of their well-being and the environment.
2. Supporter of Small Businesses: They have a genuine appreciation for supporting small businesses and the value they bring to their communities. They understand the impact of their purchasing decisions and actively seek out opportunities to support and uplift local entrepreneurs.
3. Embraces Self-Care: They prioritize self-care and understand its importance in maintaining overall well-being. They seek products that enhance their self-care routines and are eager to try new products and experiences that promote relaxation, rejuvenation, and a holistic approach to self-care.
By embodying these characteristics, an ideal client aligns with my values and the mission behind my products. They become not just customers but also advocates who genuinely resonate with the message and purpose of my business.
