Meet Stephen Linsley

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Stephen Linsley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Stephen, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I think i found my confidence from my work. Which I think is preferable to getting confidence from my ego, which i think is unreliable

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Back in my 20’s I was the bass player in The Jim Carroll band, We made records for the Atlantic Lablel. Jim was a Poet and so our music was much more about literature and soul rather than say, Girls and cars. That had the effect of forming an artistic sense that was deeper and more authentic than your average bear. I stopped playing music for nearly 30 years and during that time I honed my skills as a photographer. Some how may years of photography has brought me back to playing music. My musical encarnation on the web is FatGandalf and you can find my music at spotify, youtube, apple music and amazon music.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Emotion is top of list. Everything i do is emotionally based. Be it photographs or music. second to that i would say curiosity and constant openess to learning new things.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
They exposed me to music. They weren’t musicians themselves but they both loved music and there was a lot of music in my house
