Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Stevie Minx. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Stevie, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
It started when I began taking my first Burlesque class back in August 2019 with Tito Bonito. They taught us Burlesque training and techniques 101 with a group of other folks to develop our first Burlesque number. I was so nervous, but this has been in my mind and I knew I just had to go for it. I wanted to incorporate my Nonbinary Fem identity into my performance and represent a different type of Queer body on stage. I began dancing and coming up with different type of movements and from then on come up with a certain type of choreography. The more I kept practicing the more I was in tune with myself. I was loving how free , sexy and silly I can make my Burlesque number be. With that self realization I start to gain confidence on what I was going to show. The amount of encouragement I got from my partner, friends, and colleagues I knew I can do. With that, I was able to go up on stage at Faultline Bar in Melrose and Vermont and star in my first ever Burlesque Show. I was wearing a pink lingerie from Hustler underneath a vintage pink nightgown with a pink robe and near the end of my performance i went down to my pasties and thong hiding behind a giant fan. Many great compliments and met so many great folks that day that it open doors for me to continue my Burlesque journey and have a good self esteem that I am on the right path to show more Queer Burlesque for the future generations.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Stevie Minx and I use They/He/El/Elle pronouns. Born and raised in Los Angeles,CA. My family are from Nicaragua and moved here back in the late 70s early 80s. I’m a Nonbinary Queerlesque Performer that had worked and volunteered for several Burlesque Shows and venues as a performer, stage kitten, money wrangler, stage hand, front of the house usher and door for the past four years. My icon is Selena Quintanilla, Bettie Page and Dita Von Tease. Thanks to these amazing artists inspired me to pursue my own journey. I love how Burlesque makes me feel powerful and confident with my shiny costumes and dance choreography. When given the opportunity to perform I love every moment and every minute you get to be with amazing artists in your line up and get to meet the audience after your number to interact and share what they enjoyed of your performance. Living in Los Angeles, you get to see many different type of shows and love how the Burlesque shows have been up for the past years. As a result, it allows me as a Queer individual to showcase my Burlesque art which I call Queerlesque. I can be authentically myself and be in a Burlesque community where we empower other folkx to be their authentic self.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Self love, community, and patience. Self love taught me that regardless of any negative comments I get of myself it doesn’t effect me because I know what I am and who I am. Community has been one of the greatest experiences that has helped me and network with other folks that are passionate about Burlesque as much as I was and finding my Burlesque community at Empowerment in Heels back in Oct 2019 has helped me so much and I’m forever fortunate to have build long lasting friendships. (@empowermentinheels)Patience is key. I had to be patient with myself that I trust the the process and patience was going to bring me all the necessary tools. Even til this day I am still learning patience because everything will improve once you pause, breath and relax.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely, I would love to collaborate with anyone that is interested in working with LGBT+ folkx and would like me to participate in their events. I would love to connect with any potential sponsors to curate an LGBT+ all inclusive Queerlesque Show in Los Angeles. If you are out of the state of California and would like to get in contact for booking or in the state of California for booking in your area, you can check my Instagram page @stevieminx_ and send me a message. Hope to be able to connect in the near future. -Stevie Minx💋
