Meet Sumedha Chawla

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sumedha Chawla. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Sumedha with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Oh! That’s easy. I draw my work ethic from my parents, who set a remarkable example for me. Raised in a close-knit joint family in India, we started with humble beginnings. Both my parents, a dedicated physician and a steadfast bank employee, worked tirelessly for everything they achieved. Growing up, I observed their unwavering commitment, witnessing the heights one can reach through hard work, discipline, and perseverance. Their relentless efforts inspire me to emulate their success and strive for even greater accomplishments.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a cake artist, and in 2020, I founded ‘Desserts Beyond Borders’ as a platform to channel my creativity into edible art. Specializing in custom cakes, I craft unique creations for both children’s and adults’ celebrations, including weddings. The most fulfilling aspect of my work is witnessing the pure delight and happiness my customers experience when they first set eyes on their cakes, and even more so when they savor each bite. To me, the taste of the cake is just as crucial as its appearance, and I take immense pride in delivering the complete package of visual and culinary delight.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my view, discipline, dedication, and consistency stand as the three pivotal qualities for achieving success in any pursuit. Discipline fuels motivation, dedication fuels continuous learning, nurturing creativity, and consistency fosters reliability and trustworthiness.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I juggle dual roles as a clinical researcher on weekdays and a passionate cake artist on weekends. In my business, I wear multiple hats – consultant, baker, designer, cleaner, photographer, social media manager, and more, all at once. Being a perfectionist, I strive to evoke sheer elation in my clients when they see their cakes. Balancing all this alongside a full-time job, home, and family can be overwhelming at times. During those moments, my husband and I strategize, allowing him to shoulder some household responsibilities, ensuring our ship stays afloat. Clear communication and planning are my secret weapons, helping me sidestep overwhelm.
My advice to those feeling stretched thin: don’t hesitate to seek help. Overextending yourself won’t lead you far.
