Meet Tamara Gaynor

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tamara Gaynor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tamara below.

Hi Tamara, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
For many years I have struggled with homelessness and working for other people. I have dealt with stress, anxiety and depression with having to do what employers wanted me to do which sometimes I did not feel was right. This lead me to start thinking about starting my own business.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I was sitting down one day talking with my mother about candles that I wanted to buy but candles are so expensive now. So I then decided that I would make my own candles for myself as a hobby. As I was talking to a friend she suggested that I start my own candle business. Which at first I thought was a crazy idea I was like no one would buy a candle from me when they can go to the store and buy them. But after talking with a few people I have been told that they would buy my candles if I made them. So I’m starting on my journey with my candle business with hope and prayers for success. I have been working on my candle business now for a few months trying different fragrances to find the right that will appeal to my customers. Also by working on my candles it helps me to relax and relieve some of my stress from the day.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of my qualities and skills are I love to create things. As a childcare teacher I spend a lot time creating different projects and activities for my classroom. Being able to come up with ideas and being able creative new things is something that has had a lot of impact on me as a person because of things that I went through in my life.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My mother Kathy and Shy have been two people that have been the ones that have helped me overcome some challenges that I have had to deal with. My mother has been there to help me through a divorce and the lost of my father. My mother has been my biggest supporter. Shy along side my mother they both have been there to help me deal with some of the stress and anxiety that I have been dealing. They have been pushing me to pursue my dream of starting my candle business I have been working on different fragrances to get them right. They had been my two biggest fans on letting me know how my candles burn and how the scents smell and last. I’m so thankful to have both these ladies in my life and push me to strive and focus on getting my business up and going.
