We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tamara Goodwin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamara, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?
Short answer to this is living life! Seriously, if you are truly living life you’re going to be forced into taking a risk at some point. Sometimes the risk pays off and sometimes it doesn’t. That’s the beauty of it though. Life is an incredible experience, and it’s going to play out how it’s meant to. I’m actually in the middle of a major transition period in my life (again) where everything around me is changing.
Change is all I know to be a constant throughout life. Your ability to adapt to that change (for better or for worse) and take risks leads to the possibility of getting the most out of life.
I attribute my ability to take risks to my childhood. Stepping into the unknown is always a risk, but it is necessary for growth which is essential to life.
Fortunately for me, I had parents that supported my desire to take risks. From a young age I had a curious nature, and my parents encouraged me to pursue all the things that interest me. It’s a big part of who I am today.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Currently I’m an assistant director for UCLA (a #1 hospital in California), RN, realtor, author, model and actress. It sounds like a lot, but really it’s just all the endeavors I’m interested in.
Part of that big change I mentioned earlier was transitioning to a different role in my hospital administration career that involves more responsibility. It’s challenging, but exciting because I am being stretched in so many different ways. It’s funny, I actually dealt with imposter syndrome when I first took this job, and now I’m confident that wherever this journey takes me I will adapt to the change.
Speaking of change, I feel like I have to talk about fear. I have a unique relationship with fear. I hadn’t really noticed it, but I’ve had a few friends point out that I come across as fearless. I think this is a misconception about me. I have fear like everyone else, but the difference is I choose to not give in to it. Whatever I’m afraid of, I tend to lean into it because I know that by facing that fear I have the biggest opportunity for growth.
As far as my new events/projects are concerned, I am with a new brokerage Engel & Völkers ( due to a merger with Dilbeck), and I just released my latest art series called [ The As/sign/ment]. It’s centered around African goddesses and the elements of life, which was serendipitous because I happen to be pregnant.
I also have my book Ruby Green And The First Day of School available for purchase on Amazon as paperback and Kindle versions. Please support if you haven’t had the chance. Part of the proceeds are donated to charities which help marginalized communities in the greater Los Angeles area.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
So I immediately gravitated to the areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey for self development. Life has taught me many lessons but I feel these are the keys:
1. Empathy. The ability to understand how someone else feels is crucial to us connecting with one another outside of the differences we may have. It is the bridge in strengthening humanity.
2. Gratitude. The ability to be thankful for what you have is the path for inner peace.
3. Love. By far the most powerful area of knowledge I have ever known. To me it is life’s purpose. To give and receive love. That is all.
The best advice that I can give you to strengthen these areas is therapy. We all have bias, trauma, and hardships that have developed in our lives. Healing yourself will help you heal others.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of growth this year has been letting go of control. I am a bit of a control freak so this year in particular has been transformative for me as I learned to let go. I have relinquished the narrative I’d held in my head for so long on how my life should be, and decided to let life live through me. As I mentioned before, life is an incredible experience. Be kind, grateful, and share love. I love you.
