Meet Tamia Haynes

We were lucky to catch up with Tamia Haynes recently and have shared our conversation below.

Tamia, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Know Your Worth: It’s essential to recognize your value and the unique perspective you bring to the table. You are there for a reason, and your presence matters. Believe in your skills, experiences, and the knowledge that you can contribute to the conversation.

Embrace Your Uniqueness: Rather than seeing your differences as a disadvantage, view them as an advantage. Your distinct background can offer fresh perspectives and creative solutions that others might not have considered. Embrace your uniqueness, and let it be your strength.

Continuous Learning: Stay committed to self-improvement. In a room where you’re the only one who looks like you, there might be added pressure to excel. So, stay updated in your field, keep learning, and use your knowledge to build your credibility.

Cultivate Confidence: Confidence is key. Even when you’re the only one who looks like you, carry yourself with confidence. Believe in your abilities, and others will believe in you too. Don’t be afraid to speak up and share your thoughts.

Find Allies: Seek out allies who can support and advocate for you. Build relationships with colleagues who appreciate your contributions and can help amplify your voice when necessary. Having a support network can make a significant difference.

Listen Actively: Being the only one with a different perspective, you have a unique opportunity to bridge gaps in understanding. Actively listen to others’ viewpoints and be open to collaboration. Respectful communication can break down barriers.

Lead by Example: Demonstrate the values of diversity and inclusion through your actions. Show how diversity benefits the organization and the broader community. By leading by example, you can inspire positive change.

Don’t Be Discouraged by Setbacks: There may be moments of frustration, when your ideas are overlooked or misunderstood. Remember that setbacks are part of the journey to success. Learn from them, adapt, and keep moving forward. Setbacks can make the biggest come backs.

Mentorship and Role Models: Seek out mentors or role models who have faced similar challenges. Learning from their experiences can provide guidance and encouragement as you navigate your path.

Advocate for Inclusion: I use my position to advocate for diversity and inclusion in my field of expertise. Encourage policies and practices that promote a more inclusive environment, so others don’t face the same challenges you have.

In being the only one in the room who looks like you, you have the opportunity to be a trailblazer, paving the way for others to follow. Remember that your success can inspire and empower others, and your presence adds immeasurable value to the spaces you inhabit. Stay true to yourself, be confident, and continue making a positive impact. Your journey is a testament to the strength of diversity, and the change you can bring is immeasurable.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Artistic Skill and Attention to Detail: The foundation of being a successful PMU artist is having a strong artistic skill set. Creating permanent makeup that looks natural and enhances a client’s features requires a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of color theory, symmetry, and aesthetics. To develop and improve in this area, I recommend: • Practice regularly, both on paper and on willing clients if possible.
• Take art classes or workshops that focus on techniques like shading, blending, and color theory.
• Study the work of experienced PMU artists and pay attention to their techniques.
2. Hygiene and Safety Knowledge: In the field of PMU, maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and safety is non-negotiable. Clients are trusting you with their appearance, and it’s crucial to ensure their well-being. Understanding and following proper sterilization and safety protocols is essential. To develop and improve in this area:
• Stay updated on industry standards and regulations regarding hygiene and safety.
• Invest in high-quality equipment and sterilization tools.
• Consider obtaining certifications in bloodborne pathogens and infection control.
3. Client Communication and Customer Service: Building a successful PMU career involves not just technical skills but also strong client relationships. You need to listen to your clients’ needs, provide them with realistic expectations, and make them feel comfortable throughout the process. To develop and improve in this area:
• Practice active listening to understand your clients’ desires and concerns.
• Develop excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain procedures clearly.
• Prioritize client satisfaction by addressing any issues or questions promptly and professionally.
In addition to these three key qualities, skills, and knowledge areas, I would also advise early PMU artists to:
• Seek mentorship or training from experienced PMU artists.
• Stay updated on the latest trends and techniques in the industry through workshops, conferences, and continuing education.
• Build a strong online and offline presence through a professional website, social media, and networking within the PMU community.
