We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tanisha Bostic. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tanisha below.
Hi Tanisha, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I grew up around very strong and confident women and that had a lasting impact on the adult that I have become. I was blessed enough to have grown up in very close proximity to my great grandmother, grandmother, aunt as well as my mother and father. The self-esteem and self love that was instilled in me gave me discernment, empathy, optimism, drive and most importantly faith. The examples they led by showed me that the world is yours and I had their support 100% in achieving my goals.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I started my company Body By Chyna in 2020. This came about because after I had my twins in 2019 I was not satisfied with how my new body was looking to me so I decided to do something about it. I started wearing waist shapers and exercising and it was making me feel alot better about myself so I had the bright idea to offer to others what was working for me. So my business has waist shapers, waist beads and other shapewear. Selling shapewear is special to me because of the boost of confidence it gives to the people that wear them. I feel like it’s a form of self-care and that is something that should be practiced by all.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
If I had to choose three qualities that I think were most impactful in my journey I would have to say diligence, being relatable and having patience. Diligence is important because having your own business is work. You have to cross alot of T’s and dot alot of I’s especially in the beginning dealing with licensing and permits. It’s important to be relatable also because if people can see themselves in you or relate to you in any way you will be better received. It’s best to be yourself and put your personality in your products so that people will receive you in a real way. Patience is key also because sometimes maybe even often your sales may not be what you would like or hope for but if you stay patient and put in the work you will do just fine. The best way to develop or improve on these quality is to put them in action and practice them regularly.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Feeling overwhelmed is natural and something that happens to everyone. Alot of people wear many hats rather you’re an entrepreneur, a parent, an employee, a son, a daughter or a combination. It is my philosophy to prioritize self-care because if you are not operating on full capacity for yourself you can’t give anything else your all. When I feel overwhelmed I like to take a step back and take my mind off of what is troubling me at the moment and nothing does that better than some good food from my favorite restaurant with a good friend I can vent my frustration to while listening to some good music. I find that taking some time to refocus gives me the ability to come back with a clear head.
