We were lucky to catch up with Tauni Maya recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tauni, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from the challenges I have faced and overcome. Growing up, I was independent and on my own from a young age. I went from being homeless to becoming a homeowner, and those experiences taught me to be resourceful, adaptable, and determined. As a young working professional, I faced setbacks, including being taken advantage of, but those lessons motivated me to open my own agency where I could create a better environment. I have also been in the shoes of many infertility warriors—I experienced the heartbreak of miscarriages, false hopes, and disappointments. Those struggles shaped my empathy and determination to support others on their fertility journeys, making me stronger and more committed to my mission.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Courage to Fail: Starting a business, launching a nonprofit, or sharing my story publicly all required me to take risks. Not everything works out, but failure teaches you lessons you can’t learn any other way.
Faith and Perseverance: When times got tough, I leaned on my faith and belief that things would work out eventually.
Lifelong Learning: I’m always reading, researching, and learning from others. Staying curious helps you stay relevant and open to new opportunities.
My advice for people are be patient with yourself and embrace failure as part of the journey. Stay open to learning from anyone—mentors, peers, or even clients. And building a strong support system and seek out communities where you feel seen and understood.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! For Baby Wish Foundation, I would love to collaborate with individuals or organizations passionate about fertility and making parenthood more accessible. Whether it is donating, volunteering, or helping us spread the word, we’re eager to connect.
