Meet Taylor Boyd

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Boyd. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.

Taylor , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
It’s something that I’ve always had. My first job was as a nursing assistant at a small nursing home when I was seventeen. We were told that everything was our responsibility (within reason) when housekeeping, maintenance, etc. wasn’t there. I took that very seriously and treated my workplace like the resident’s home.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a full time registered nurse and run a small business by myself on the side. I have always strived to be different. Even though I mainly work with polymer clay like many other artists I try to be different and unique with it. I always make sure to buy jewelry of quality that is safe to wear. Right now I have an Etsy shop, Facebook, and I vend at local events. I haven’t signed up to vend at any events yet for this year but I plan to. I’m starting to look into events to sign up for now.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I am extremely organized so that definitely came in handy working full time as a registered nurse, running an Etsy site, and vending on the side too! Being a good communicator definitely helps. Working in healthcare I have to talk with people a lot and that definitely made vending a lot easier for me. Starting a small business at the beginning of 2023 gave me the opportunity to be more adventurous. I learned what events went well for me and which ones didn’t. I got to go to lots of new places in Wisconsin that I had never been to last year. Like a lot of things in life, sometimes having a small business is trial and error. You have to roll with the punches and be willing to ride with the waves; of both the highs and the lows.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Finding your audience is probably the most difficult part. I’m still working on that. Sometimes you find out about events too late that would have been a good fit for you. Sometimes events have to pick and choose because there are so many applicants and you don’t always get chosen. Sometimes events that you thought you would do well at you just simply don’t. Even online it’s hard to be seen sometimes based on rules, algorithms, etc.
