We recently connected with Taylor Perry and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
The resilience that I have grown to have today, comes from God himself. I believe that without the faith that I have in him, I would not be as strong or be able to bear some of the obstacles that I have gone through in life. I believe that my resilience also comes from the people that I keep around me. Which is something so important. Having people to uplift me when things are not going the best or when I run into a problem, always helps me feel secure that everything will work out and it is okay to keep pushing.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am Taylor Perry, originally from the greatest city there is, Chicago, Illinois. I left Chicago in 2017 to pursue a degree at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. I began my journey of being a hairstylist right on Fisk University’s campus. It came about in 2019 and since then it has been something that i’ve loved to be a part of. I am a certified braider which includes all different braid styles, faux locs, and protective styles as a whole. I decided to go full time with it in the year of 2022. Since then there has been many ups and downs, as it would be with any entrepreneur. But, one thing that has not changed has been the passion I have for it. What I am focused on the most for my hair business at this time is growth in clientele and expanding the brand as a whole into different lanes like youtube and sponsorships. I believe the most exciting thing about this hair business of mine is being able to wake up everyday and do what I love. Being able to service clients and transform them into what they want by using my knowledge and hands is such a blessing. Also, the endless possibilities that come with having a business and how it can grow with you as a person is amazing to watch. Which is why I am pursuing a Youtube channel for my personal life and my hair servicing experiences. I will be showing who I am as a person and what I go through, but also showing my skills and techniques to the world for anyone who may want to pursue what I do or just be able to do it for themselves or even learning how to do their future daughters hair.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The 3 most important qualities or skills that helped me achieve certain goals with being an entrepreneur the most, I would say are consistency, confidence, and not comparing my journey to others. I would say being consistent is the only real way to build something from the ground up. Being able to be consistent requires alot of discipline. When that day comes that im just tired and ready to give up or feel like I dont see progress or even that it may not be worth it, something comes to show me that im moving in the right direction and to keep going. Consistency is the best way, your blessing could come tomorrow, but you wont know if you dont decide to keep being consistent.
Having confidence is a big one as well. When you have confidence in yourself it shows others, especially people interested in your business, that you are about your business and that they can trust you. When a person comes in contact with someone they will be paying that is not able to give them a sense of security, they will most likely result to choosing someone else. That person may not even be as qualified or have the same skillset as you, but because they had the confidence, they were able to reel that person in more. Building your confidence just comes with consistently perfecting your craft. It also comes with a bit of delusion as well. You have to really believe that you are the best and there is no one else like you.
Lastly, I believe that watching other people’s journey, can have either a major positive effect on a person, or it could do the complete opposite. With the world that we live in today, social media plays a huge role in perception. It shows the best parts of people and their lives. Of course no one wants to show case their downfalls, so looking at other people’s lives on social media can make you feel as if you may be behind or that you are not doing enough. But, in reality we never know how much a person had to endure to get to be able to showcase so many positive things. Which is why consistency is key. Growing in today’s society, you have to understand that life is not a race, it is a journey. And, everyones journey is completely different. The best way to overcome this is to continue to focus on yourself and to learn to be happy for others no matter where you are in your journey, because you could very well be next.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes! I am always eager to find people to connect with and collaborate with. I would love to collaborate with different braiding hair and braid gel brands, I would also love to get into sponsorships like skin care, makeup, hair extension brands, etc. Honestly, all things beauty and travel are the things im most excited to look forward to. They can find me through social media of course on instagram, @_baddietaaay & @_TayloredHair_ for my hair business page. Also, my email is [email protected] for any inquiries.
