Meet Taz Garcia

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taz Garcia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taz below.

Taz, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
So much of my motivation and resilience stems from my martial arts training that enhanced my focus and constant hunger for growth – to earn what I want in life. Also, having experienced war as a child and realizing that nothing is truly for granted and that there’s no better time to live, pursue goals and love as the present.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I have been a corporate executive, teacher, and former professional athlete who loved making films since I was eight years old. As a low-budget filmmaking maverick, I established a reputation for helping up-and-comers and leveling the playing field for aspiring performers in the film industry. Despite the fact that many people may be aware of my action roles or link my name with ACTION, I had never given action films any thought until I was first cast as a Power Rangers character and then my ethnicity was decided upon at the last minute, forcing a recasting of my role. Ever since then, that has been a turning point in my life when I’ve decided to pursue an action-packed career instead of continuing with my comedy and drama background until my body can’t do action proficiently any more. I am incredibly appreciative that I have had the privilege of working with icons like Sylvester Stallone, Jackie Chan, and John Cena. I also want to keep pushing the envelope by giving up-and-coming actors and filmmakers a platform to be seen and be heard while bringing attention to all the stars who work behind the scenes to make it all happen through seminars and events like our annual Movie Expo. Look out for me in Broken BondReacher and Trickle & Flow.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Vision. Discipline, Determination.

Vision: You always need a vision of what you want to achieve or where you want to go. Without having a vision you will be like a captain with a vessel without navigation. Having a vision makes you pin point the direction you want to head to and by taking baby steps a day towards your goals you will get there.

Discipline: You will need discipline to keep you doing what needs to be done even when you don’t feel like doing it. Motivation doesn’t stick around for too long but discipline will pull you through. It’s how greatness is achieved.

Determination: Find your ‘WHY’. By understanding that question and providing your answer you will go far! Nothing worthy has ever come easy. The best stories come from how you problem solved, navigated the curve balls while still getting to the finish line! Enjoy the journey and understand it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’d love to collaborate with Jackie Chan to create a game show focused on martial arts where martial artists (competitors) compete for a grand prize from all over the world. Each participant tests their fighting techniques against opponents and scenarios in different rooms based on their experience to move on to the next round, which progressively gets harder until the final stage with a grand prize.

Another idea would be to have stunt teams compete on four separate competition stages in front of a live audience, similar to America’s Got Talent, in order to secure a gig on set with a major production company.

Though I have a ton of ideas, I’ll end with this one: having a creative hub with a Canadian celebrity like Ryan Reynolds would allow aspiring filmmakers and content creators to train and work at a very affordable rate with a large number of “in-house” cast and crew members who would be accessible via an app to assist the aspiring artists and possibly even shadow them to gain practical experience.
