We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Teresa Yeung a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Teresa, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I have a small habit – I enjoy documenting the things I need to do each day, noting down the delicious foods I want to try in the future, collecting recipes, planning future travel destinations, contemplating stories I want to create, and envisioning the characters I want to draw. Over time, this list has grown with numerous aspirations. Every time I glance at it, it fills me with joy. I eagerly anticipate how to make the most of each day, ensuring that I don’t squander any opportunities and gradually bring these dreams to fruition.
Goals don’t always have to be grand or overly complex. Reflecting on why I initially aspired to become an illustrator, I realized that my true aim was to capture all the beauty and charm in everyday life, transforming them into stories and illustrations that would bring smiles to people’s faces. This aspiration in itself is truly remarkable. As one continues on this journey, new goals naturally emerge. This is how humans progress in life and personal growth.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m an illustrator who grew up in Hong Kong and later studied art in the United States, expanding my knowledge, artistic skills, and understanding of various illustration markets. Interestingly, despite considering myself a slow reader, the allure of books has always captivated me. Whether it’s the book’s cover design, intriguing plots, or the captivating illustrations that adorn its pages, I have a deep appreciation for storybooks and comics.
As a result, my aspiration is to actively contribute to book illustration for various genres, including storybooks, textbooks, and cookbooks, to inspire people to read and appreciate the value of illustration. I had the unique experience of creating a book called “The Lonely Island,” where I handled everything from storyboarding and scripting to the actual illustration work. It was an incredibly rewarding and rare experience.
I also look forward to collaborating with my twin sister to craft engaging stories, sharing our unique perspectives with publishers and readers. If you like my work, please reach out via email to discuss potential commissions and ideas!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Creativity is a crucial quality that adds depth to the creative process and allows individuals to express their thoughts and ideas directly. To nurture creativity, observing everyday moments and recording intriguing ideas from daily life often leads to valuable inspiration.
In addition, I’ve learned that not only maintaining a consistent artistic style and color palette, but upholding unchanging creative principles, efficient work habits, and skillful execution is also important.
Lastly, creators should embrace their unique cultural backgrounds and consider incorporating them into their work. Personally, my deep appreciation for Asian cultures, such as Japanese prints, manga, and global cuisines, has become a distinctive feature in my creations.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I’ve just completed my university degree and am transitioning into the workforce. Over the past four years, I’ve experienced significant personal growth, like became more independent, made new friends, explored different places, and improved my communication skills. Furthermore, I’m committed to remembering my teachers’ guidance and applying it diligently in my endeavors, striving for excellence within my capabilities. Even if success doesn’t come immediately, I believe that dedication and time will ultimately yield results.
