Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Teri Starr. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Teri, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Whenever I go anywhere I’m usually an “outcast”. If you know me personally you would know that I will dress up even if I’m just going grocery shopping. I express myself through the way I dress and people stare at me everywhere I go. Honestly on the inside I am so shy but you would never know because I carry myself with a lot of confidence and I don’t let the stares run me back in the house. I am who I am and I want people to see me and be like “wow, she’s bold” “I like her style”. And then inspire people to come out of their shell and don’t let society or stereotypes stop them from expressing themselves and wearing whatever they want.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Teri Starr, age 23 from central Florida. I’m an indie alternative rock artist. I have an EP called “indie, Fendi, Prada” and a few singles including the single I just released called “upside down”. You can find all of my music streaming on all platforms. What’s most exciting about my music career so far is realizing people are starting to listen and enjoy my art. When I first started releasing music back in July 2024, I didn’t expect to be heard, really I didn’t expect anyone to hear me out because of the stereotypes I’ve always struggled with growing up and even now to this day. I am extremely thankful for everyone who takes the time out of their lives to listen to my music it means so much and inspires me and pushes me to keep going and keep telling my story. I’m working on new projects every single day and I’m planning on releasing at least 1-2 singles a month.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back I would say the three qualities/skills that are most impactful in my journey is self discipline, patience, and interpersonal skills. Self discipline is important to me because I have never taken singing lessons a day in my life. Everyday I’m gaining more confidence in my voice. I do my own warm ups and practice a lot to strengthen my voice and discover new things about my vocals. Patience is always key. If you are early in your journey it may take some time to reach your audience and it’s a little discouraging honestly, but you must keep going and be patient and before you know it you’ll have so many listeners and others who appreciate what you’re putting out. Lastly I would say interpersonal skills are very important in your music career. It really helps to be able to communicate clearly and effectively to where you are comfortable with working with other artists, producers, etc… network, connect with people who have similar interests and take in all the knowledge and criticism you can take. It helps build you up and gain more supporters and friends, which is an amazing feeling. Don’t ever give up.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always looking for people to collaborate with. I have two bands that I look up to so much and would love to work with them. “Coldplay” and “Ekkstacy”. That would be a dream come true. I am open to work/collab with anyone whether it’s a clothing company, musician, artist, band, I don’t discriminate. I admire art in all general forms. I love when two or more artists put their creativity together and create more art it’s like harmony.
