We were lucky to catch up with Tesha Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Tesha with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I believe that my strong work ethic stems from my upbringing. From a young age, I was exposed to the value of hard work and determination. As a child, I took the initiative to sell fireworks to kids in my neighborhood at the age of six, and later began selling candy in grade school. By the time I was 14, I was already participating in the summer youth program, which instilled in me a sense of responsibility and the importance of earning my own keep.
Growing up in a household where my parents held working middle class jobs, I learned firsthand the significance of self-reliance and providing for oneself. They taught me that hard work isn’t just an option, but a necessity for creating a stable and independent future. Their guidance laid the foundation for my work ethic, emphasizing the importance of striving for success and not having to depend on anyone else for my livelihood. Consequently, I have carried these valuable lessons with me throughout my life, and they continue to drive me to approach every task with dedication and diligence.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a certified Breath Work, Certified Sound Bath and Yoga Teacher and have been helping others in the wellness space, for over 7 years. With a degree in Psychology my love for the human psyche, the mind and ancient healing practices inform my teachings and techniques. My journey in the world has aligned me with brands and public figures such as: Savage Fenty, Fabletics, The US Federal Reserve Bank, Tech Style Fashion Group, Black Women for Wellness Collective and more. I found yoga after sustaining a back injury and scoliosis. Yoga lead me to find meditation which helped me with healing feelings of anxiety and depression. I searched for ways to feel better and was able to heal myself with breath work, movement and sound. And as they say, “the rest is history.” Helping change a person’s sadness to happiness brings me so much joy, and using my gifts to change the frequency of the world – one person at a time – is what matters most to me.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Resilience: The ability to persevere in the face of challenges and setbacks has been crucial in my entrepreneurial journey. Building a business often involves encountering obstacles and failures, and my resilience has allowed me to bounce back, learn from these experiences, and continue to move forward with determination.
2. Adaptability: In the dynamic landscape of entrepreneurship, adaptability has been essential. Being open to change, embracing new ideas, and adjusting strategies based on evolving circumstances has enabled me to navigate shifting market conditions and capitalize on opportunities as they arise.
3. Vision: A clear and compelling vision has provided the guiding force behind my entrepreneurial endeavors. The ability to envision long-term goals, identify innovative solutions, and inspire others with a shared sense of purpose has fueled my passion and commitment to creating and growing successful ventures.
These qualities have been pivotal in shaping my entrepreneurial journey, allowing me to overcome challenges, evolve with the ever-changing business environment, and drive forward with a clear sense of purpose and direction.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The number one obstacle or challenge I am currently facing is achieving a healthy balance and prioritizing my well-being. I recognize the importance of incorporating time for leisure, play, and enjoying life, yet I have found it challenging to strike a harmonious equilibrium between my professional responsibilities and personal fulfillment.
To address this challenge, I have taken proactive steps to reassess my daily routines and make deliberate changes to my schedule. I am implementing time management strategies to allocate specific periods for work, relaxation, and engaging in activities that bring me joy. Additionally, I am practicing mindfulness and setting boundaries to ensure that I honor my personal time and recharge my energy.
Furthermore, I am actively seeking support and guidance from mentors and peers who have successfully navigated similar challenges. By learning from their experiences and insights, I aim to gain valuable perspectives on how to effectively integrate work and leisure, fostering a more sustainable and fulfilling lifestyle.
Ultimately, I am committed to prioritizing self-care and recreation as essential components of my daily life. By consciously dedicating time to play and enjoy life, I am confident that I can overcome this challenge and cultivate a more balanced and rewarding existence.
