We were lucky to catch up with Tevin Evans recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tevin, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
I think by nature as a native New Yorker by default our nature is to be a bit pessimistic. NYC more so than any other city in the US is a massive hub that can be extremely overwhelming and so it makes sense that our mindsets would lean towards pessimism. I’ve always challenged that, I’m not sure if it’s my rebellious nature or how I was raised but optimism always felt more true to my outlook on the world around me. I see and know that things can always be better, I know that I am deserving of more than this life has dealt me thus far, yet I know that this is not because of privilege it is because I work for it, I actively seek it.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a model and stylist born and raised in Brooklyn NY! I got my start as a stylist assisting the likes of Marni Senofonte, Daisy Llewelyn, Laura Ferrara, Ani Hovhannisyan, Carlos Nazario and working alongside my one of my best friends Kim Dillinger! I’ve since worked on e-commerce projects as well as solo editorial projects for Levi’s, Vogue’s digital platform PhotoVogue, and event styling! As a model I have been published in A Magazine, Vogue, GQ France, HuffPost, MTV, Native Son, and Lampoon Magazine. I have also posed for notable photographers such as Ryan McGinley, Eric Hart Jr., Luis Alberto Rodriguez, Tarik Carroll, and Guarionex Rodriguez Jr.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking the three qualities, skills or areas of knowledge that have been most impactful for me were 1: Always take direction when given and apply it to your skill set. This helps you to grow! A photographer once told me on set to help calm my nerves to think of posing in front of the camera as a conversation through my eyes and body and that my job is to tell a story. This helped me then and continues to be a pillar for me
2: Each time you step onto set be ready to perform. No matter what your role on set is.
3: Advocate for yourself, this doesn’t mean to be rude! It simply means that if you feel discomfort and it hinders you from doing your job to your full potential or something doesn’t seem right address it or notify someone who can safely address it for you!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always open to collaborations, there’s so much power in positive collaboration! Right now as I continue to embark down this new chapter of my life in creating my podcast “Broke and Privileged” I am always looking for new people to share their thoughts and stories with me! You can reach out to me on any of my Instagram @FatChuckBass or @Broke_and_privileged!
