We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Thaís Mendonça. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Thaís below.
Thaís, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I think this is not easy, because as a photographer, I have a tendency of repeating some poses or get used to seeing the world the way I already see it, instead of being surprised like a child would be seeing new things.
Living on an island like Maui, in Hawaii, it’s hard to get used to all the beauty I experience here, but I also have to be attentive to not take it for granted and appreciate the moments I witness here. I think being present and appreciating what I experience in life, even little trivial things, is a way of keeping my creativity alive.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Thaís and I’m a Brazilian photographer/writer. My brand name is Island Muse Photography and it’s based on Maui – Hawaii. I say that my work is about capturing the beauty that I see in the connection between women, their love stories, and nature, on earth and in the water.
Everything started when I decided to change my career in my 30s and I became an underwater photographer. Nature was always my place to be, especially in the ocean. I always loved registering what I see there, photographing and filming. I worked in a beautiful island in Brazil, Fernando de Noronha, and in Curaçao, in the Caribbean.
Now, in Maui, Hawaii, island Muse Photography was created to connect with people who are also connected to nature.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think three things that always have helped me are: – Never be afraid to ask. I always learn something.
– Be opened to new opportunities and possibilities in life. I never know how the path will be designed if I take some risks.
– Spend more time in nature. It helps me to clear my mind and my thoughts, as well as my creativity.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I think having created my brand’s name as Island Muse Photography and refined my packages’ types on land and in the water gave me a direction of where I want to be in my photography here on Maui, the other islands in Hawaii and more places in the world.
Trusting my abilities in photography and investing in positioning my brand as a photographer who captures people and their moments in natural places, like beaches, forests and in the water are my current goal.
