We were lucky to catch up with The Messenger recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi The Messenger, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
All of my life, I’ve always wanted to be different. As I kid I was teased because I did certain things that didn’t seem to be normal to others. I always wanted to stand out from the crowd. I never wanted to look like or sound like anybody else. In high school, I would wear my dad’s suits to my basketball games because I wanted to look professional as possible. When it comes to my music, I always wanted to be remembered as The Messenger. I’m the artist that can’t be boxed in. I have my own sound and my own swag.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Who Is The Messenger? The Messenger is a son, husband, father, brother, Active Duty Soldier in the Army, uncle, nephew, cousin, mentor, friend, etc. I’m alot of things to alot of people, but let me introduce myself to those that don’t know me. I am The Messenger, music artist of multiple styles of music. I love being creative when it comes to being a music artist. Whatever topic is on my mind and heart, I have to create it. I want my music to reach everyone in the world. Everything I do within music and life has a message within it. My passion is music and I love everything about it. My music is streaming on all digital platforms and I have multiple music videos on my YouTube Channel. I’m trusting the process and continously staying persistent. Stopping is not an option.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
One of biggest qualities is my mindset. Ive always had this saying of, “If I say I’m going to do it, then I’m going to do it.” I’ve always embrace the mindset of never having any regrets in life. Also, the imagination to always create whatever I felt. Music should have a concept and should always be relatable. I took those skills and qualities to heart and they’ve shaped me into the man I am today. The advice I have to give is this, don’t let nobody tell you that aren’t good enough. Your vision is your vision and only you can fulfill the vision. Continue to have unwavering faith and know that all things are possible.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
From my perspective, everything that I was good at growing up I wanted to do them all. I played sports, I wrote music, I sung at church, and I was in the band. One thing that I didn’t know is that everything I was good at, helped me become stronger in areas I was weak at. For example, as a kid I sung in the church choir, but I was always afraid to lead a song. Over a period of time, my voice became stronger and I build the confidence to sing in front of a crowd. If I had stayed in the background, I probably wouldn’t have been able to sing in front of large crowd’s today or it probably wouldn’t have came as natural. So I say build on your strengths and watch how they naturally affect some of your weaknesses too. You’ll be amazed at your overall growth.
