We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tierra Castile a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tierra, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I would have to say from watching my foster mom growing up. She would always be doing something to help others in some way, whether it was catering food or running an in home daycare or helping out in the church. She would always tell me me “ you have to work hard to get the things you want in life and it’s not always going to be easy.” Watching her do all those things while being a foster parent to six children is what gave me the drive to work hard towards my dreams and goals.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a photographer and what makes what I do feel special to me is that I get to meet new people and help come up with creative ideas for their shoots. I want to help create art that’s unique to my clients based off their ideas. I get most excited getting to know their personalities helping choose shooting locations and going through the process off bringing their ideas to life and their final reactions to their photos.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The qualities and skills that were most impactful on my journey would have to be staying open minded cause you never know what might be asked of you, being able to communicate effectively, and knowing your camera. My best advice is to keep going and find mentors to help elevate you. Surround yourself with people who want to see you win.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I do complete self care day to help unwind my mind and body. I go get a massage, read , garden paint, play my playstation and drink chamomile green tea basically anything that helps calm down and relax and brings me peace. I believe self care and taking time to yourself to readjust is extremely important because life can be hectic and overwhelming at times.
