Meet Tiffany E. Brockington

We recently connected with Tiffany E. Brockington and have shared our conversation below.

Tiffany E. , so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
I persist despite haters, nay-sayers, and spoilers because I believe that everybody has a purpose, a destiny to work towards, and ultimately: achieve. Since I believe that for everybody, and first and foremost: for myself, I cannot be concerned with what haters, nay-sayers, and spoilers have to say about me and what I have going on. If I did, I would become distracted… and that attention wouldn’t go towards my work, my passion, and projects. If I get distracted and really emotionally invested in external things that do not grow or enhance me personally or professionally, or constructively, then I have to contend with my own internal conflict. I can avoid all unnecessary conflict by remembering to put myself and my goals first; and prioritizing those (people and institutions) who are like-minded and propel me towards my goals.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am Tiffany E. Brockington. I’m a Native Detroiter, double HBCU alumna (Howard University and Kentucky State University), and the creator of How to Reach Hillman®. How to Reach Hillman is a platform designed to expose prospective HBCU students to the collective HBCU educational and cultural experience.

I created How to Reach Hillman because I saw an extreme gap and need.

All students deserve equal and equitable access to higher education options. Unfortunately, many students are not presented with an equal and equitable opportunity to be exposed to all viable higher education options. Currently, the national college access agenda does not include Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the same way that it provides access and opportunities to all other colleges and universities.

In fact, school districts, particularly secondary schools, depend on organizations like the National College Attainment Network to support college access, post-secondary professionals, and college-going culture in the school environment. However, the National College Attainment Network can only provide access and programming on behalf of the institutions that are part of their network. There are no Historically Black Colleges and Universities that are part of the National College Attainment Network.

We create access to the Nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities through the How to Reach Hillman® platform.

We facilitate ease through direct service and education to secondary students. We help our secondary student clients discover their best fit HBCU. We make life easier for our student clients by providing HBCU information and insight that they can readily use to create a plan of engagement and action towards admission and enrollment at their best fit HBCU.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Earnestly pursue your passion/interest: in doing this, you’ll attract who you need to help you get to that next level; 2. Once you do number 1, you’ll be in position to receive/attract a mentor/sponsor who will train you/educate you/create opportunities for your growth. This can be in multiple people;
3. Know and understand that there will be some discomfort because growth, learning, and unlearning hurts a bit. But nothing is insurmountable.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
I had a deeply affirming childhood. Between my parents, they gave me a strong work ethic/drive that I expertly apply to my own desires and business; tenacity and audacity: once I have identified what I want, I will have it; and a very strong sense of who I am. It’s these qualities that have served me and continue to serve me as a navigate life.
