We recently connected with Tiffynee Terry-Thomas and have shared our conversation below.
Tiffynee, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Resilience, often defined as the capacity to endure and rebound swiftly from adversity, is a remarkable quality that finds its wellspring in the promises of God made to me. Throughout my life, I’ve faced numerous challenges, yet none more daunting than my battle against the specter of death. In 2010, I received a devastating diagnosis of congestive heart failure, with my heart’s function languishing at a mere 14%. Since birth, the shadow of mortality loomed over me, but it became unmistakably imminent with this prognosis – the realization that the very engine of my existence required replacement, and that my fate was teetering on the precipice of life and death.
Rather than ceding authority over my lifespan to medical professionals, I consciously entrusted this pivotal decision to the Creator, God. I opted to anchor my faith in the promises He had bestowed upon me. This journey has been far from effortless, but it has illuminated a profound truth: I harbor an abundance of aspirations and ambitions that must not be overshadowed by the specter of death. My resolve to transcend this ominous prognosis emanates from my unwavering commitment to God’s word. His promises have been my unwavering beacon, guiding me through life’s tempestuous seas.
In this endeavor, I have not been alone. I’ve been fortified by a supportive and nurturing community that has stood by my side even during my most vulnerable moments. Their collective strength has bolstered my own, reinforcing my ability to endure, adapt, and thrive in the face of life’s formidable trials.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a multi-faceted professional, encompassing the roles of a clinical sexologist, relationship coach, author, mentor, neuroscience researcher, and speaker. What truly exhilarates me about my vocation is the opportunity to challenge deeply ingrained belief systems influenced by societal and cultural norms. I have the privilege of holding up a mirror to my clients, posing candid questions that often remain unexplored, and witnessing the transformative power of self-revelation.
In essence, I serve as a pivotal catalyst for change in the lives of those I work with, guiding them towards establishing a profound connection with their Creator, God. I consider myself a representative for God’s people, an agent of transformation, reaching out to men and women alike. My brand is founded on the bedrock of self-reflection.
I am also the author of “Sis, Is It You?” – a book that transcends gender boundaries and has spawned numerous spin-offs to ensure its relevance to all. This unique work functions both as a workbook and a traditional book. As readers engage with its content, they are prompted to pause and reflect every few pages, fostering a sense of active participation in a conversation with me. It’s as if we are engaging in a genuine and enriching dialogue.
What sets my approach apart is that my background as a sexologist serves as a gateway to self-discovery. After all, understanding oneself is the cornerstone upon which solid relationships are built. Without this fundamental self-awareness, the sustainability of healthy and fulfilling relationships, including those of a sexual nature, remains elusive.
I have a wealth of recent projects and upcoming endeavors. These include my current book, “Sis, Is It You: Discovering Self-Revelation,” a daily planner, a thought-provoking sermon and journal combination, and an upcoming 500 daily prompt journal and devotional book. In the coming year, I am excited to release my newest work, “Dear Little Me,” which involves introspective reflection to recognize the divine presence in life’s hindsight.
In addition to my literary contributions, I have orchestrated and hosted over 75-100 events, a testament to my commitment to education and learning. I am currently on the path toward becoming a neuroscientist and actively engaged in neuroscience research. My group and I are on the brink of publishing our first paper on early life stresses. This journey into the intricate workings of the brain has not only illuminated my personal path but has also afforded me a profound understanding of humanity at a deeper level.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The top three qualities that have left the most profound impact on my life are integrity, resilience, and self-discipline. These qualities have been instrumental in shaping my journey.
First and foremost, integrity has been a bedrock for my personal growth. It has compelled me to be honest not only with others but, perhaps more crucially, with myself. This commitment to truth and authenticity has served as a launching pad for the other qualities to flourish.
Self-discipline, the second of these qualities, rides on the coattails of integrity. It is the pillar that has enabled me to accomplish the tasks and goals I set for myself. Without self-discipline, my intentions would remain unfulfilled, and my ambitions unrealized.
Furthermore, resilience has played an indispensable role, particularly during my struggles with health issues. It has been the inner strength that enabled me to persevere when obstacles seemed insurmountable. The resolve to overcome adversity, to bounce back, and to keep moving forward has been indispensable in my journey.
The most valuable advice I can offer is this: identify your core values, principles, and strengths. Recognize that while it’s important to address your weaknesses, it’s equally vital to nurture your existing strengths. Often, we focus on improving areas where we are less proficient and neglect the talents and qualities we excel in.
One effective strategy is to document your goals and aspirations, creating a tangible reminder of your purpose. This tangible representation can be a compass to maintain focus and determination. As the scripture from Habakkuk 2:2 suggests, write down your vision and make it plain, for clarity is a potent motivator.
Finally, a sense of community can be a powerful ally on your journey. By sharing your weaknesses with others, you open the door for assistance in areas where you may not be as strong. Building a support system that values your strengths and bolsters your weaknesses can be a source of guidance and encouragement, making your path toward personal growth and achievement more fulfilling and effective.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
One of the most impactful decisions my parents made for me was entrusting my great-grandmother, Ruby Irons, with my upbringing during a pivotal period in my life when I was just 14 years old. This choice had a profound influence on the person I have become.
Had my parents not made this decision, I may not have been exposed to the unique experiences and valuable life lessons I gained under my great-grandmother’s care. It allowed me to develop a deep sense of servitude and an unwavering attitude of gratitude. From Ruby, I learned the paramount importance of humility in one’s journey through life.
At that stage in my life, my parents were navigating their own trials and tribulations, sometimes losing sight of life’s broader spectrum. Allowing my great-grandmother to raise me provided me with the opportunity to view the world in all its vibrant colors, rather than through a simplistic black-and-white lens.
Ruby’s guidance went beyond worldly matters; she also instilled in me the significance of nurturing a relationship with God and placing Him at the forefront of my life. This spiritual foundation became the compass guiding my path, teaching me that when you prioritize God, everything else falls into place.
So, aside from the profound gift of life, one of the most meaningful choices my parents made was to allow someone as wise and caring as Ruby to pour boundless wisdom, love, and faith into me. This decision shaped the course of my life and helped me grow into the person I am today.
