We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Timothy Vettel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Timothy below.
Hi Timothy, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic has been cultivated over time through understanding that while motivation can ebb and flow from various sources, the true cornerstone of sustained effort is discipline. This valuable lesson has been instilled in me by coaches, parents, and the natural consequences of neglecting responsibilities. Life’s experiences have reinforced the principle that working smarter, not just harder, is key. However, this doesn’t imply the existence of shortcuts but rather emphasizes the importance of efficiency and purposeful action in achieving goals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
In my journey from a decade-long career in finance to entrepreneurship in 2017, I’ve embraced the challenges and rewards of business ownership with open arms. Starting with 9Round, my venture into the fitness industry led to the ownership of two gyms, which was only the beginning. The entrepreneurial spirit took a further leap with the establishment of a CDL training academy in Nebraska, an endeavor that has reached individuals from over 23 countries. This global outreach is a testament to our commitment, highlighted by my brother and co-founder’s efforts in Kenya to foster relationships between governments for mutual benefit.
What excites me the most about working in the fitness sector is the opportunity to meet a diverse array of people. While profitability is a crucial aspect of any business, I’ve always believed its true measure extends beyond financial gains. The choice to open gyms over potentially more lucrative ventures, was driven by a desire to contribute positively to society. To me, success is about providing value and making a difference in people’s lives, not just achieving financial milestones.
The foray into facilitating immigration efforts through our CDL training academy opens a new chapter of learning and personal growth. Engaging with individuals from various corners of the globe, all united in their quest for a better life, offers a refreshing perspective rarely witnessed stateside. This endeavor not only keeps me grounded but also enriches my identity, reminding me daily of the broader impact of our work.
As for what’s on the horizon, we’re constantly exploring new avenues to expand our reach and enhance our offerings. Whether it’s through launching new programs at our gyms, extending our training academy’s capabilities, or forging international partnerships, our goal remains steadfast: to empower individuals to achieve their best, both physically and in their careers. Keep an eye out for exciting developments as we continue to evolve and strive to make a meaningful contribution to both our local and global communities.
Embarking on the journey of entrepreneurship has not only been about creating successful businesses but also about evolving and expanding in ways that profoundly impact our communities. Since launching 9Round, our venture into the fitness industry has grown from just providing high-intensity interval training to recognizing the need for a more holistic approach to fitness. In response to our members’ feedback and the latest trends in health and wellness, we’re thrilled to test the upcoming expansion of our 9Round locations. These enhancements will include larger spaces dedicated to incorporating a wider variety of strength training options. This development is particularly exciting for us as it aligns with our commitment to offering comprehensive fitness solutions that cater to the diverse needs of our clientele.
However, our vision extends far beyond the realm of fitness. The success of our CDL training academy in Nebraska has inspired us to dream bigger and explore additional avenues where we can make a significant impact. We are actively looking into expanding our educational offerings to include HVAC, mechanic training, and even nursing programs. Our goal is to create a broad spectrum of career-oriented training opportunities that empower individuals not just locally, but globally, to secure their futures and contribute positively to society.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, three pivotal qualities have significantly shaped my path: embracing failure, perseverance, and maintaining perspective.
Embracing Failure: Learning to accept failure as an integral part of the journey has been foundational. It’s crucial to understand that failure is not a reflection of your worth but a stepping stone to growth. There were times I felt like a loser, particularly during the challenging periods of 2019 and 2020, when the fitness industry faced unprecedented obstacles. However, accepting failure taught me resilience and the importance of adapting to overcome setbacks.
Perseverance: Closely tied to accepting failure is the quality of never giving up. Perseverance means pushing forward, even when the odds seem stacked against you. It’s about holding on to your vision and working tirelessly towards it, regardless of the hurdles. This relentless drive is what keeps you moving forward, turning obstacles into opportunities.
Perspective: Maintaining a healthy perspective has been invaluable. It’s easy to get lost in the minutiae of daily struggles or setbacks. Keeping a broader perspective helps to contextualize challenges as temporary and surmountable. It fosters a mindset that looks beyond immediate difficulties, focusing instead on long-term goals and the bigger picture.
Advice for Those Early in Their Journey:
Normalize Failure: Start by normalizing failure in your mind. Understand that every successful person you admire has faced and overcome numerous failures. Accept failure as a teacher, not an enemy.
Cultivate Grit: Perseverance, or grit, is a muscle that strengthens with use. Set small, achievable goals alongside your bigger dreams. Celebrating small wins builds resilience and fortifies you for the long haul.
Expand Your Perspective: Actively seek out stories of those who’ve navigated challenges similar to yours. Learn from their experiences and maintain a network of mentors and peers who can offer diverse viewpoints. This will not only enrich your understanding but also provide a wellspring of inspiration during tough times.
Embarking on a journey fraught with uncertainty can be daunting, but remember, the qualities that define your success are often honed in the crucible of challenges. Embrace the journey with openness to failure, unwavering perseverance, and a broad perspective, and you’ll set the foundation for a fulfilling and impactful career.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
In the dynamic realm of the fitness industry, the most formidable challenge we face is burnout. It’s an all-too-common obstacle for owners, trainers, and fitness providers alike. There’s a pervasive pressure to “fake it till you make it,” maintaining an exterior of endless motivation and positivity, even when we’re grappling with our own struggles. This expectation to constantly exude enthusiasm can be exhausting, as we navigate our personal battles, sometimes even amplifying the stress and fatigue we experience.
On the front of our CDL academy and immigration services, the primary hurdle is raising capital for expansion. The demand for our services is soaring, yet, securing the necessary funding in the current economic climate has proven to be more challenging than in previous years. Our strategy to overcome this involves diversifying our approach to fundraising, exploring new investment channels, and strengthening our proposals to potential investors by showcasing the undeniable demand and the impactful success stories from our programs. Patience and persistence are our guiding principles as we navigate these financial waters, confident in the knowledge that the value we provide will ultimately attract the support we need to grow and serve more people.
In both cases, whether combating burnout within our fitness ventures or seeking capital for our educational programs, our resolve remains unwavering. We’re committed to adapting, innovating, and pushing through the challenges, driven by the profound belief in the impact of our work.
