We were lucky to catch up with Tom McGeoch recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tom, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
It actually took me many years to develop my confidence and self-esteem. I remember a specific therapy appointment I had about 8 years ago where I just wanted a quick-fix for those things. I was like, “what books do I need to read to be more confident”. I just didn’t believe in myself at all at the time. Looking back, one of the biggest things that helped me develop my confidence and self-esteem was just creating positive evidence for myself. If it was something as small as just going to a party to make new friends, I would go home at night and write down what went well. If it was something bigger like performing on stage, I would write down all of the positive things that people said to me after I performed. I would read these things every day and then started to actually believe what was written down. I was always so focused on the negative stuff growing up, and now I try to look at the positives. As long as I’m in action towards my goals, and learning along the way, it’s all good.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Tom McGeoch aka Tomsy hails from Columbus, Ohio, playing drums in pop punk bands since the tender age of 11 years old. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, he moved to LA to pursue his dream of a music career. Though his gateway into music was drumming, Tom has always considered himself first and foremost a creative artist. After supporting over 100 artists and bands through drumming, songwriting, and producing, Tom has honed in on the music he wants to create for the world. He is a multi-instrumentalist and has always expressed his insightful observations about life and people through poetry and songwriting. His music combines far reaching influences such as The Story So Far, 070 Shake, Radiohead, The Weeknd and James Blake but above all, he is interested in the authentic, emotional and real. His journey has taken him from behind the drums to stepping out and fully embracing himself as an artist who wishes to bring people together with his songs, communing through his music to celebrate life. I have a new single coming out in a few weeks called “Angel”.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Being able to pivot when you need to. It became clear to me that if you’re trying to force something and it’s not happening, then it’s probably not meant to be. Being able to pivot and do something different when you need to is extremely valuable. Things rarely work out the way we plan, so being flexible and open to what life has in store has helped me personally and professionally.
2. Resilience
If you love something enough and you’re passionate enough about it, don’t give it up. Keep learning and growing. Do what fulfills you. We’re only alive on earth for a very limited amount of time, so don’t waste it doing something you hate!
3. Meditate
Meditation and mindfulness practice has been life changing for me. Taking time to slow down, breathe, and just be still has a ton of benefits, especially during this day and age with everyone being on their phones all the time. I use the Calm App but I know there are a ton of other meditation resources out there. Pick one that works for you and just go for it.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
I’d have to say just supporting me and loving me unconditionally. No matter what I wanted to do, my parents were always behind me every step of the way. Whether it was baseball, snowboarding, gymnastics, guitar, drums, you name it, they always wanted me to be happy and would do everything they could to help me reach my goals.
