We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Toquetta Christian. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Toquetta below.

Toquetta, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
Although it’s taken me some time, i’ve learned to listen to my body. Spiritually Emotionally. Physically. Mentally. I try my best to do a daily audit, prioritizing what’s in deficit out of these sectors.

That now looks like slower mornings, which means I need to wake up earlier, lol. Starting my day with God, gratitude, prayer and praise. I work out 3-4 dyas a week, which is a major stress relief, with a bonus of health factors. Change of environment because different scenery can inspire and break up the monotony. Travel and good food is great for the soul!

From my experience burn out happens from lack of boundaries and balance. I’m working mastering both.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
For the past 17 years, I’ve worked in the beauty industry as a cosmetologist, this includes 11 years and counting as salon owner, 4 years a Cosmo instructor, and now business strategist/coach.

Im owner operator of Salon SHEARiousity , we specialize in healthy hair, blonding with integrity, and short cuts. I’ve created a salon space full of encouragement, vulnerability and confidence. Allowing my guests to be comfortable in all aspects.

Im excited about my group coaching program launching this spring, educating other beauty and grooming professionals on revenue-generating strategies and techniques to take their businesses to the next level.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
looking back, here are some of the qualities or skills that has helped me during my journey. I have always remained teachable, it’s important that you be around people who know more than you. People you can learn from, mentorship is very important.
Discipline. Discipline carried me when my determination and consistency was lack there of. Discipline will always win.
Third, business is business, it’s never personal.
Lastly, Big GOD and a lot of faith! My relationship with God has sustained me. I owe it all to him!!

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, I like to take a moment to myself to reflect.. I like to ask myself The following;

-Why am I feeling this way?
-what was my part in the the things I could control ?
-Was my response to the things I couldn’t control practical?
-Did I expect too much from myself or someone else?

I’ve realized, overwhelm is an emotion ultimately I can control. Being okay with doing what you can when you can is the sweet spot.
