Meet Trish Hines

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Trish Hines. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Trish with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Definitely from my parents. They both grew up in the ’30s and ’40s when things were tough. They in turn worked hard to make sure my brother and I had a good life without being handed everything we wanted. I learned the value of achieving something on my own, which makes you very appreciative.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
After being active in national bbq competitions, I created a line of gourmet bbq sauce products, Sassy Q BBQ. I saw the need to have more health forward bbq products in the market, and developed recipes that are low in sugar, sodium and gluten-free. Getting to market wasn’t easy, and neither is staying there. It’s extremely competitive! Every day is a learning experience when it comes to keeping up with market trends and distribution. My biggest challenge right now is expansion. But it’s pretty cool to walk in to a grocery store and see something you created on the shelf, and more exciting to see someone put it in their basket!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
If you want to pursue your business as an entrepreneur, you definitely have to do the research and learn every aspect of what it is you want to promote/sell. Never proceed blindly and know your competitors. Of course social media is an essential skill to have these days! I never knew I would have to learn to make videos in order to sell bbq sauce! Logistics is something I had to learn in my particular area, as we distribute to grocery store chains and you need to have an understanding of what happens once your products head to market. The MOST important quality I think someone should possess is persistence! You will get many no’s before you get to yes. I believe that most schools now offer courses on becoming an entrepreneur. Wish I had access to that when I was a student!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! I love to connect with chefs/foodies on social media who will cook with my products and talk about them! So if you are one of those people, get in touch!
