We recently connected with Tsvetta Kaleynska and have shared our conversation below.
Tsvetta, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
As an immigrant from Bulgaria, I have spent a considerable part of my life as the “only one in the room” – the individual who stands out in terms of background, experiences, and perspectives.
My journey to the United States in 2008 was driven by a desire for a better life. That journey marked the beginning of a continuous process of adaptability and resilience. Navigating a new culture, language, and immigration system while pursuing my aspirations instilled in me a deep well of determination.
Achieving my green card was a significant turning point as it opened up a new chapter filled with greater stability and a wider horizon of opportunities. However, the lessons I learned during my years as an outsider remained deeply ingrained – the importance of adaptability, the strength of resilience, and the unwavering belief in
my own abilities.
As I navigate the professional world, I continue to draw upon the lessons of resilience and adaptability learned during my journey as an immigrant. I believe that being the “only one in the room” is not a limitation but an opportunity to showcase my unique strengths and contribute meaningfully to diverse teams and organizations.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Cultural Sensitivity and Language Fluency: My multicultural background and fluency in five languages have been invaluable assets throughout my career. They have enabled me to connect with diverse audiences, build global networks, and understand different business cultures.
2. Adaptability and Resilience: The ever-changing landscape of technology and business has demanded a high degree of adaptability and resilience from me. I’ve learned to embrace change, pivot when necessary, and persevere through challenges.
3. Continuous Learning and Growth: The pursuit of knowledge and continuous learning has been a cornerstone of my personal and professional development. I’m constantly seeking new information, expanding my skillset, and exploring emerging trends.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I’ve come to believe that there is no single answer to this question. Instead, it’s about finding the right balance between leveraging our innate abilities and developing a broader skillset.
My entrepreneurial journey has been shaped by this dual approach. My fluency in five languages has been a cornerstone of my success, enabling me to connect with diverse markets, build global networks, and understand and adapt to different business environments. This linguistic advantage has been invaluable in establishing my two successful boutique firms, RILA GLOBAL CONSULTING and Merse Advisory. As a parent of two young children, I have also focused my efforts on developing bilingual education books for kids, including my first book “The story of Kukeri: Colorful Adventures of Bulgarian Tradition”.
However, I also recognize the importance of developing well-roundedness beyond my linguistic strengths. As an entrepreneur, I need to be a jack-of-all-trades, capable of handling a wide range of tasks, from marketing and sales to finance and operations. I’ve invested time and effort in enhancing my skills in these areas, which has contributed to my ability to manage and grow my businesses effectively.
My linguistic strengths have opened doors to global opportunities, while my ongoing efforts to develop well-roundedness have equipped me to navigate the complexities of business and achieve a level of success that would not have been possible with a singular focus.
