We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Twanita Dozier a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Twanita, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
As a CEO of a platform built from scratch, creativity is one of many driving forces for me. I’m always focused on the next level for my business, and how I can keep my audience engaged. In times where I’m needing to keep my business current, my creativity kicks in and leads the way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am more so known for my multimedia platform Boss Up Magazine, but as of recent I have developed a mobile app called “Book Black.” This is an exciting project and moment for my platform and audience, as it has allowed my platform to evolve and provide a community & resources for audience! The Book Black app is a resource for booking travel related lodging, events, and entertainment. It allows users to find black business property owners who lease and rent space, as well as black owned restaurants, bookstores, coffee shops, content spaces, co-working spaces, and much more. I created this app to further spotlight & recognize black owned businesses, as well as provide a resource for potential patrons who are in search of their offered products and services!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For me, dedication, patience, and taking risks were the three main things that were most impactful. Entrepreneurship is not easy and requires more than one may initially assume. In anything that you do, especially with running a business, you have to know and understand that things take time to take off – so patience is definitely a virtue. You have to stay focused on the task and goals you have set for what you are trying to do, so you must stay dedicated to your vision throughout the journey. Also, you can’t grow while in comfort zones, so you have to take risks, as they lead to lessons and opportunities of success. I’m not saying it will be a walk in the park, but it will definitely be worth it in the end.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I try to take a moment to breathe and assess what exactly is making me feel overwhelmed. I do think having balance and good time management plays a role in being overwhelmed, which sometimes can make me stress if not handled properly. My advice for anyone in this predicament – is to make sure you’re not spreading yourself too thin, prioritize your tasks/projects, and make time to focus on and analyze your progress. You always want to work smart!
