We were lucky to catch up with Ty Bjorklund recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ty, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I think being a woman of this day and age has created these unattainable pressures of always feeling never enough. It feels like I can’t be just one thing; I need to have achievements, goals, and side hustles or I am irrelevant to the world. Thus this extremely high expectation is set that almost feels unachievable. This rhetoric affects how I define success in my life and what my purpose is. So recently there has been a mindset shift that changed my outlook on life. Those “things” and achievements never lead to purpose but lead to always desiring more, never really experiencing contentment and satisfaction. So I was left to wonder what makes me feel content. What made me feel like I left a mark in the world? Through reflection, I realized that my purpose in life is to authenticate human connection, whether that be through interactions or photography. What matters in life is the investment and intentionality, those are the moments we want to remember and that leave imprints on our lives. That was my purpose.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Ty Bjorklund and her family currently reside in Aurora, Colorado. She is a wife and mother to four children. Ty pours her heart and soul into her family and photography. She loves and is most filled when she can appreciate creativity and art. You can usually find a coffee in her hand as she is kind of becoming a coffee connoisseur. She loves to travel with her husband as frequently as time and life allow.
“I won’t be distracted by comparison if I was captivated by my purpose.”
For me, photography was just a side hobby, never in my wildest dreams did I think that it would one day become a business. For the past eight years, I have embarked on a journey of self-discovery, learning, and determining what I wanted Tyler B Photography to be. What I have found is that I want to be a photographer who gives my clients the priceless gift of captured life, the moments in time that we never want to forget. So my job as a photographer is not simply to get the picture-perfect portrait shots but also the moments in between.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think three qualities that have impacted me are self-revaluation, always being willing to try and take risks, and always being a learner. I think when I first started I thought I would get a rhythm and I would just stick to what I was doing and that would be it. But I think as I have evolved and really reflected I can expand my business and craft. So always being willing to take constructive criticism from myself and those around me has been beneficial.
Additionally, being willing to take creative risks has been scary but rewarding all at the same time. I think for me not being able to control the outcome or response was the most challenging, but it has really made me grow as an artist.
Lastly, learning new ways of doing things has been challenging but also helpful.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The book ” Atlas of the Heart” by Brene Brown has been a game changer for me. It is a book that has given language to creating meaningful human connection and the human experience. I think the biggest takeaway for me is that the idea of being present and having compassion is more important than trying to manage the relationship and control the outcome. Allowing vulnerability to be honored and validated, and not exploded or leveraged. For some reason these nuggets were very impactful.
