We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tyler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tyler below.
Tyler, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
To be honest, I don’t think it’s ever something you truly overcome. I deal with it daily, I just have to remind myself that it ultimately is just me comparing myself to others and that’s the worst thing to do. Everyone has a different journey, a different path that they’re on and I have to take a step back and tell myself that I am no different and I cannot be perfect even if I try my hardest.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the vocalist and guitarist of the AltPop band, Practically Paradise. We’ve been prepping for a lot of new music to be released over the course of the next year. We’re very excited to be releasing new stuff and can’t wait to share it with you guys. We also will have new merch being released soon, as well as upcoming shows!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
To start, one of the qualities that was the most impactful in my journey would have to be being stubborn and headstrong haha. I won’t back down from a challenge and being in a band is filled with challenges, but nothing stops me from pushing for what I want to do with Practically Paradise. I might be slowed down, but I won’t give up.
Another quality I would say has been most impactful has been my ability to work with others and admit that you need help with something. Being able to work well with others is detrimental to the music industry, you’re meeting different people at most shows, you are meeting and working with producers, some you may have met or worked with before, some may be new. Being confident in your ability to work with others is very help and being able to admit you need help, is a great quality.
Lastly, one of the most impactful things on my journey has been my capability of not being largely affected by negative comments. When you’re creating art, in any sense, you will be putting it out into the world, When doing this, not everyone will like what you produce, this is expected and totally okay. But you cannot let this discourage you, it’s a matter of opinion, and at the end of the day, if you’re happy with what you produce, that’s what matters most. Nothing else.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Honestly, ‘The Creative Act: A Way of Being’ by Rick Ruben has been absolutely life changing. One of the most valuable things I’ve learned from this book has been that everyone, EVERYONE, is an artist. Rick Ruben describes you taking a new way home from work is an act of art. And goes on to explain that life is filled with art, creating a sandwich a new way, is an act of art. The book is amazing and I cannot recommend it more. I haven’t even finished it yet but I know it is going to teach me so much more.
