Meet Umar Baig

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Umar Baig . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Umar , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Work ethic is a belief in the value of hard work and dedication to a task or goal. It is a personal attribute that can be influenced by a variety of factors, including an individual’s upbringing, cultural values, education, and personal experiences. I developed a strong work ethic through the example of my parents and other role models. Most importantly I learned the importance of hard work through their my successes and failures.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I began my journey in Hospitality over 10 years ago, starting at the front desk of hotels and then onwards to managing 4 diamond hotels. However I have always had a passion to feed good food to people. I wanted to create a menu that would be grounded in my Pakistani roots, and mixing it with amazing cuisines we have around the country. So for some years I went ingredient by ingredient, mix and matching cuisines to come up with the Halal Mother Truckers menu. Now I have been serving people all around DFW for the past 4 years. When I first started my journey, I invested all my savings into creating Halal Mother Truckers. I would drive uber in the mornings or late at night to support myself, while working on the truck during lunch and dinner shifts. Slowly but surely I was able to build a book of business. While doing that I also had an opportunity to be the voice of change for food truck reform. I was featured in articles from The Dallas Observer and Eater-Dallas. These platforms were kind enough to publish my take and help bring light to food truck reform. Through so many up’s and downs, I believe we have created an amazing brand.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Starting a business can be an exciting and challenging endeavor. Here are a few pieces of advice for people who are just starting out and the skills and qualities I had to learn and develop:

1) Do your research: It’s important to understand the market you are entering and the competition you will face.
2) Create a business plan: A business plan outlines your vision for the company and serves as a roadmap for achieving your goals.
3) Network and seek advice: Building relationships with other business owners and industry experts can be invaluable.
4) Stay organized and manage your finances: Good organization and financial management are crucial for any business.
5) Be resilient and adaptable: Starting a business can be unpredictable, and you may face challenges along the way. It’s important to stay focused and be prepared to adapt to changes in the market or industry.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Me!! No one is coming to to save you. You have to learn through hardship and failures. You can go out and look for answers and see what works and what doesn’t. At the end of the day it will have to be your personal drive and dedication that will lead you to success. If we sit around waiting on someone to come and help, it will never happen. Self development is a big key to success.
