We were lucky to catch up with Vanessa Cooper recently and have shared our conversation below.
Vanessa, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I got my resilience from my mother. Growing up as a child, I watched my mom struggle and face challenges. No matter what situations she faced, she always got through them. My mother is so strong and she always holds her head high. She is a warrior and superhero to me. More importantly, I gained that one skill of resiliency from her.
Also, I grew up in an environment filled with everything from drugs to death. I made a commitment to myself not to succumb to the negative trends of the place where I was raised or be a statistic of the environment.
Throughout my adult life, I have also faced many unfortunate circumstances. However,no matter what I face, I always stay open-minded about everything, whether it is a good or bad thing. I know that I will overcome any challenge by staying consistent and persistent. Without resiliency, faith, prayer, and trusting God, I would not have made it this far.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I founded my very own tax preparation service company, Cooper Tax Services, in 2018, and it is now a 6-figure company. We specialize in preparing small business and personal income taxes. We have also become a service bureau provider, where we help others start their own successful Tax Preparation Businesses.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, on my journey I would say that the three skills that were the most impactful. That I would provide to others who are in the first stages with their journeys. First skill is accepting reality. When we own our reality and learn how to squeeze meaning from it, it empowers us to be able to improvise now for best results in the future.
The second is being resilient. Because in our earlier stages of our journey we will be faced with many challenges. Having resilience helps with problem-solving when it comes to tricky situations. It helps you adapt to situations and overcome them.
Lastly, I would say is communication. Which is my biggest because I’m still growing in that area now. But it’s one of the best skills you can have. Effectively communicating is good to have for any business owner, it helps in sealing a deal. It is crucial to communicate clearly in negotiations to achieve desired goals.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The book that plays an important role in my journey and self-development is “The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene.” It has plenty of attributes that changed my mindset. One of them is the 4th Law in the book.
“Say less than is necessary,” which is very useful when you are a business owner.
