Meet Velisa Woods

We recently connected with Velisa Woods and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Velisa , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my both sides of my family. I’ve been working since the age of 12. My grandfather owned a corner store in South Memphis my entire childhood. My grandparents raised 6 children and sent them all to college. My father is also a business owner who had a store as well. My uncle, his brother was a business owner. He owned a store and a night club. My mother worked for the Internal Revenue Service for over 20 years before she departed this Earth and bought a home. My grandmother worked for 30 years as a cook in an orphanage in Memphis. I had no other choice in the matter but to have a strong work ethnic.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an educator, wellness consultant, and entertainment industry advisor. Though my journey started with becoming an educator in the public school system, after 7 years, I decided to take a different path. After earning three degrees in education (B.S, M.S, Ed.S), I decided to resign from teaching and became a curator and promoter of live music events, showcases, and open mics. While doing shows, I started managing artists, co directing music videos, and booking artists. Around 5 years ago, I became interested in the cannabis industry. I educated myself on holistic medicine though college courses, internship, and conferences. My wellness consultancy includes the use of holistic medicine for good mental health and therapy. Through the years, I’ve gained a plethora of experiences that have given me the knowledge and expertise to consult and advise on education, entertainment, and wellness. After a few years of entrepreneurship, I returned to education in a leadership role. I’ve wrapped all the skills and business into one, V.Woods Media.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Belief in self! You have POWER to do whatever you want. I think people don’t realize the power that they have within. I can’t stress that enough. The most impactful skill or quality that everyone has is the ability to educate yourself on whatever you desire. KNOWLEDGE is POWER.

The advice I have is to educate yourself. Become an expert in whatever the goal is.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The 25th Hour: Developing Efficiencies to Manifest Your Life Goals by Gerald Williams was published in 2017. I came across this book and it has helped me tremendously. I has also inspired me to write the book that many have told me I need to write. Here are two nuggets from the book:

Chapter 3 “Be intentional about “The Ask” – When you ask the universe for your “ask” it has to be connected to your vision, your intention, and your expectations.”

Chapter 8 Claiming victory during the warm up – Along the way to reaching your goals, you have to claim victory.
