We were lucky to catch up with Via Li recently and have shared our conversation below.
Via, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Keeping my creativity alive is essential to my artistic journey, especially as I strive to represent the intricate emotions of women. To achieve this, I engage in a multi-faceted approach that involves deeper thinking, reading, and capturing my own feelings.
Deeper thinking serves as a foundation for my creative process. I constantly delve into the complexities of women’s emotions, pondering the myriad experiences, challenges, and triumphs that shape their lives. This contemplation allows me to unearth the subtle nuances that often remain hidden beneath the surface.
Reading is another invaluable source of inspiration. I immerse myself in literature that explores the human psyche, relationships, and the female experience. This not only broadens my perspective but also fuels my imagination, enabling me to weave intricate narratives through my art.
However, the heart of my creative sustenance lies in the act of capturing my own feelings. I draw from personal encounters, emotions, and moments, using my own experiences as a canvas to depict the emotions that resonate universally. This self-reflection not only lends authenticity to my work but also establishes a profound connection between my art and the emotions it seeks to portray.
In essence, my creativity thrives through a continuous cycle of thought, exploration, and introspection. By delving into the depths of women’s emotions and my own, I ensure that my artistic expression remains vibrant, evocative, and resonant.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
In my artistic journey, I am deeply committed to portraying the intricate emotions that women experience on a daily basis. My art serves as a testament to my personal story, one that has been marked by challenges since my earliest days. These hardships, rather than breaking me, have become the wellspring from which I draw strength.
My focus lies in capturing the essence of women’s emotional landscapes. What truly excites and empowers me about this endeavor is the opportunity to reveal the remarkable resilience that arises from adversity. My own journey, fraught with difficulties, has taught me that strength isn’t the absence of pain, but rather the ability to transform pain into power.
The heart of my work centers around the profound relationship between sadness and power, beauty and vulnerability. I believe that every emotion, be it joy or sorrow, holds a hidden strength waiting to be uncovered. Through my art, I invite viewers to explore these emotions without judgment, to embrace them as part of the human experience, and to recognize the untapped potential within.
As I share my personal narrative through my paintings, I hope to ignite a dialogue about the intricate interplay between emotions. I encourage people to see beyond the surface, to delve into the layers of feeling that shape our lives. This exploration not only fosters empathy and understanding but also empowers individuals to acknowledge and harness their own emotions.
Looking forward, I am enthusiastic about the continued evolution of my artistic expression. I have plans to host exhibitions and events that delve deeper into these themes—occasions designed to foster discussions about the latent power within vulnerability. My aspiration is for a wider audience to engage with my work, transcending gender, so that everyone, not just women, can appreciate and understand the significance of emotions.
By illuminating the relationship between our emotions and strength, I hope to inspire a transformative journey for myself and for all who encounter my art.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, I’ve found three key qualities: passion, perseverance, and self-discovery. My advice to those starting out is simple: find your passion, stay determined, and explore your unique perspective. Embrace what you love, push through challenges, and let your authentic self shine through your work.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
As I navigate the challenge of balancing work and creation, I’m also deeply engaged in two interconnected pursuits. Firstly, I’m actively collecting stories from fellow women, enriching my art with diverse experiences and emotions. Simultaneously, I’m delving into the complex relationship between external environments and our inner thoughts, unearthing layers of meaning that resonate in my work. These endeavors drive me forward, infusing purpose into my artistic journey and offering viewers a unique lens through which to explore their emotions and experiences.
