We recently connected with Wayne Tucker and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Wayne with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I get my work ethic from watching my parents and my older brother. They were both teachers, but they also both played the piano. Even in retirement my mother is as busy as anyone I know with things like tutoring, combat sports, and many artistic pursuits.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a full time musician based in nyc. My main instrument is the trumpet, but I also play violin and piano, and I love to sing and compose. One thing that has made my story special is that my band gained notoriety playing free outdoor shows in prospect park alongside my brother on saxophone in the height of the pandemic.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Perseverance, because you have to work hard to achieve anything, but you are also going to fail and need to pick yourself back up. One skill that impacted my journey is having great ears, the ability to hear music and know exactly what someone played. This is both a natural skill and something that I trained and developed. And I am naturally sociable which has been great for me because the music that I love to play most is social music.
The ability to focus, because focusing deeply while you work is the key to learning anything. I have a deep love for music, so I can never practice enough, compose enough or prepare enough for a performance. Practicing is not an effort, but a gift.
I am blessed have the most curious mind and imagination. Everything that I create with music first manifests in my imagination internally and in my curiosity externally.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents always told me “yes” to anything that I was curious about artistically, and always encouraged me. Both of my parents love/loved music, and they shared that love and inspiration with me.
