We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wendy Golding a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Wendy, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is a hard mentality to overcome more most. I honestly think you never fully overcome it either. As for me, I’m always battling the thoughts that I’m not doing enough or I don’t deserve the success I’ve reached thus far. My best defense mechanism to those thoughts is to remind me that my greatest accomplishment is that I’m putting smiles on many faces through my passion for inclusive ice cream treats! I remind myself that I work very hard and I’m allowed to be proud of my work and my accomplishments.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
The Creamy Spot will become Atlanta’s first plant-based full-service creamery when our doors open on March 25. As a sister company to the well-known popsicle brand GOAP, The Creamy Spot will be located in the West End/Adair Park area and will operate as a classic, nostalgia-inducing pick-up window.
Patrons can expect a variety of plant-based frozen desserts. Vegan soft-serve, ice cream sandwiches, and pints in rotating seasonal flavors. In the future, The Creamy Spot will also offer milkshakes and ever-trendy rolled ice cream.
“The Creamy Spot will be a location for folks to bring their friends and family to [so they can] enjoy a nice summer day at the picnic tables with their favorite sweet treats. We desire to foster community togetherness and remind us of simpler times. Our goals are to make everyone’s creamy dreams come true.”
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back the most impactful things I learned in business are, to surround yourself with people who genuinely believe in you and your desire to win. Having cheerleaders on your team are absolutely crucial. You will have a lot of mistakes it’s totally normal. Taking time to beat yourself up for mistakes is just taking the time away from the growth you’ll experience with every mistake. lastly, go for it! You have to dream big to win big. You have to be a bit uncomfortable to be able to push the limits.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
The biggest area of growth we’ve had in the last 12 months is taking the leap to our first brick-and-mortar location! We set our goal to take this step in year four however, the stars aligned and we beat that goal 2 years early. We are beyond excited to open our window on March 25th!
As part of her mission to bring more plant-based, dairy-free options to our community, we have her eyes set on elementary schools where our vegan ice cream options can serve as an alternative to dairy-laden frozen desserts that, for so many Black and people of color, often lead to stomach aches and digestive troubles.
Additionally, we have dreams of starting a community center where families and children can have access to better-for-you plant-based treats while enjoying green spaces. In the near future, we will have our very own community center. The dream is a huge warehouse with outdoor green space. We would love to have a community garden and a place for the neighborhood folks to come and hang out—a safe haven where kids could come to relax and grab a sweet treat.
