We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wenpei Li a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Wenpei, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
As an illustrator, and animator who also teaches in an art school, my confidence and self-esteem stem from a combination of passion for my craft and continuous learning. Engaging with the creative process and seeing the impact of my work, whether in my illustrations or through the feedback from my students, reinforces my belief in my abilities.
I actively seek opportunities for professional development, staying updated on industry trends, and incorporating new techniques into my work. This constant learning enhances my skills and boosts my confidence in tackling diverse projects.
Moreover, my role as a teacher has been instrumental in building my self-esteem. Witnessing the growth and achievements of my students is incredibly rewarding. It reaffirms that my knowledge and guidance contribute positively to the next generation of artists.
Overall, a combination of passion, continuous learning, and the positive outcomes of my work and teaching experiences contributes to my confidence and self-esteem as an illustrator and animator.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
What I find most exciting and special about my work is the ability to bring narratives to life through illustrations and animations.
Currently, I’m immersed in the creation of my first children’s book, a heartwarming tale centered around the theme of bravery. The process of crafting a story that resonates with young minds and sparks their imagination is truly fulfilling.
In addition, I’m working on my second short animation, a project close to my heart. It delves into the memories shared between my grandmother and me. Despite the challenges of Alzheimer’s, I aim to capture the essence of our connection and preserve those precious moments through animation.
Exciting news on the horizon includes a collaboration with a company where my series of illustrations, focusing on constellations, will be transformed into unique art products. It’s a fantastic opportunity to see my work take on new forms and reach a wider audience.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Keep Thinking and Creating: Consistently generating ideas and creating new artwork has been instrumental in my artistic development. By dedicating time to brainstorming and experimenting with different concepts, I’ve refined my skills and evolved creatively. This commitment to continuous innovation has been a cornerstone of my success.
2. Curiosity about the World:
My background as a journalist and editor has fueled a deep curiosity about the world. Exploring diverse narratives, from human stories to the wonders of nature, has inspired projects like my animation, ‘Drifting of a Leaf.’ This curiosity enriches my artistic expression and brings unique perspectives to my work.
3. Not Afraid of Mistakes:
In my journey, embracing mistakes has been crucial. For instance, when creating my new animation, “A Lan,” I encountered the necessity for thorough background research. Despite initial efforts, I realized the need for more detailed understanding. Instead of being deterred, I saw it as an opportunity to delve deeper. By revisiting research and consulting experts, I not only improved authenticity but also expanded my knowledge, reinforcing the value of embracing mistakes as avenues for growth.
“A Lan” Animation Project: Additionally, “A Lan” holds a special place in my heart as it delves into the memories shared between my grandmother and me. Despite the challenges of Alzheimer’s, I aim to capture the essence of our connection and preserve those precious moments through animation.
Advice for Those Early in Their Journey:
Establish a routine for ideation. Set aside dedicated time to think creatively and consistently produce new work. Stay curious and open-minded, immersing yourself in different experiences and drawing inspiration from the world around you. Understand that mistakes are a natural part of the creative process; view them as valuable lessons that contribute to your artistic development.
In summary, these three qualities—continuous creativity, curiosity about the world, and the embrace of mistakes—have been key pillars in my journey as an illustrator and animator. I believe that fostering these qualities, along with the provided advice, can significantly contribute to one’s artistic development and success.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes, absolutely! I am currently seeking collaboration opportunities, particularly with musicians. I have a deep appreciation for music, and I strongly believe that the combination of animation or motion with music can create magical and immersive experiences.
If you’re a musician interested in exploring the creative possibilities that arise from the fusion of visual art and music, I would love to connect with you. Whether it’s for a specific project or a more ongoing collaboration, I’m open to exploring the unique synergy between our respective crafts.
Feel free to reach out to me via email at [email protected]. I’m excited about the potential for creative collaboration and look forward to connecting with fellow artists who share a passion for bringing visual and musical elements together
