Meet William LaVant

We recently connected with William LaVant and have shared our conversation below.

William, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I really like this specific question, and believe it or not many can’t answer it because the majority is focused on trying to fit in & blend in. Nothing is wrong with wanting to be “accepted”,, but don’t lose who you are as an individual. I’m used to “being the only one in the room” because i was the only one in the womb, born and raised an only child you learn independence quick. When it comes to race, I’d stand out immediately and to me that’s a plus. I don’t even carry myself or dress like your everyone else, you’ll know it’s only one me in any room I enter, and even that comes with it’s pros & cons.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m always Singer/Songwriter first, everything else follows. Currently gearing up to release my 1st official music project “Bethel” in honoring the Legacy I’ve been given to carry of my Late Grandfather. I’m the 4th of my generation, but the 1st to the nation and it recently hit me how big of a deal that actually is. Graphic design (WLGraphix), fashion line (Edictwear) & of course being a Youtuber has its part in my life as well.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Many things in my life are self taught and overtime developed. 3 things to know is You are your #1 Supporter, Make sure whatever you plan to do is not a waste of time to yourself or anyone else, and always consider the risks you may face in business & in everyday life decisions.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Too many names to mention. But my grandfather was a huge influence in my hometown and he along with most of my family always showed their confidence so it came natural to me. My grandmother & auntie kept me involved in church so I had community, to be able to easily connect with any room I step into when I have to. My mom is my individuality side realizing if nobody helps you “do it yourself & get it done”. My dad is definitely my creative arts side.
