We recently connected with Wyatt Norton and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Wyatt, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
There are many areas where I’ve slacked in life, but music was never a hard thing for me to be motivated towards. I was always one hundred percent positive that I wanted to be a musician in life. Not because I thought it was cool, but because of the release and pure bliss you get from creating or playing a song. It’s easy to have a strong will to do something every day if you genuinely love it. My parents are also motivated individuals and were never shy about telling their kids to go after something if they wanted it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
A lot of my work weeks involve all 7 days, although it’s typically a fun week. Monday through Thursday I teach music at Noisemakers Inc. located in St. Pete. We teach all ages and I personally do a lot of guitar and drum lessons and help coach the bands that have formed in the school. It’s a very fun and heart filling job. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are gig days where I’ll do anything from a show with Beach Terror (original full band) to an original solo showcase to a mix of covers and originals at a brewery or kava bar to a solo cover gig at a hotel to private events and weddings. I never get bored cause there are like 5 variations of the music/sets I play, depending on if I’m playing for my heart or for my rent that day. Every now and then Beach Terror will play a longer gig with some covers we enjoy playing, but we primarily play with other original bands. I also booked 6-7 weekend music fests a year at Cage Brewing. They’re always a blast
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three words happened to come to mind and they all start with P, So let me present the triple P concept.
Persistence: If you keep doing something, you’re going to get better at it. If you keep chasing something, you will probably find it.
Patience: When you feel like you’ve been chasing for too long, remind yourself that you actually haven’t. People give up 2-4 years in on a project that takes 10 years to accomplish.
Passion: Never lose the original love and purpose behind what you’re after. Do it for the younger you who wanted to be a musician, or whatever it is that you’re aspiring to be.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
I would say the only challenge is not having very many days off. But I often have a lot of time during the day which is good. Lately I’ve been doing better with making sure I have a few days off a month to spend time with my fiancé, family and dog 🙂
