Yaminah , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I’ve learned that when you are the only one in the room that looks like you, believes in what you believe in then you have to stand confidently in who you are.

I’ve always been the type that didn’t fit in with the crowd and did my own ‘thing’ which made me stand out.

Being the only woman and or only black and woman of color in the room (a numerous of times) taught me to use that to my advantage. I’ve also been the shortest and the only person with my body type and turned that into a win.

Through my experiences I’ve come to the conclusion that when you are authentically you, you can be successful in creating opportunities for yourself and others.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
For the past two decades I have been working in the entertainment industry. As a multifaceted artist I’ve worked as an artistic director, show producer, choreographer, professional dancer, designer and entrepreneur.

Native to Los Angeles and having lived in New York for over a decade, I’ve gained a lot of experiences that has helped me be successful in my career.

I’m the founder and CEO of Art Of Legohn, LLC, which is a multimedia arts and entertainment company that specializes in Music, Dance and Visual Arts based out of Los Angeles and New York.

I’ve produced urban burlesque shows (Red Light Special A Night of Urban Burlesque®),
dancehall battles (Dancehall Battle NYC®), cultural events, community engagements and productions.

I’ve been fortunate enough to provide opportunities for multiple artists, vendors, administrators, entrepreneurs, and other creatives nationally and internationally.

As a choreographer and professional dancer I’ve worked with artists such as Shakira, Sean Paul, Pharrell, Lil Wayne,
Stephen Colbert, and have appeared on film for Disney, NBC, BET, MTV and more!

In 2020 I turned my focus to my designs and launched my online boutique Yaminah Legohn Art & Designs™.
I bling, design and handcrafted shoes, heels, jewelry, glasses, clothing and home decor.

My mission with the boutique is to share more of my creativity while inspiring people to feel good with style.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One of the main qualities that was impactful to me was learning skills that would help elevate my craft. Another quality is knowing my purpose and executing it with organization and strategy.

These qualities helped me stay educated, knowledgeable, persistent, motivated, and successful in my field.

The advice I have for people that are early in their journey/career is to always remember the reason why you started on this journey in the first place. Remember to count your wins big or small, rest, rejuvenate, and stay focused.

Talent and experience is a plus, but having a strategy and knowing your audience takes you to a whole new level. .
