We were lucky to catch up with Yamini Sagar recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yamini, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I understand that life can be challenging, and I believe in finding joy in pursuing what you love. In Japan, there’s a concept called Ikigai that embodies this idea, and it’s one that I’ve chosen to follow in my own life. As an immigrant raised in a middle-class family, I know firsthand how hard it can be to make ends meet. I’ve seen the struggles of families working tirelessly to put food on the table, and through my diverse group of friends, I’ve come to understand the challenges they face in their home countries.
I’m passionate about helping people and businesses, especially those in low-middle-income countries, who are often hit hardest by exorbitant fees and the monopoly of certain payment providers. I’ve worked in the Fintech and payments industry for over 20 years, and I’ve seen firsthand how these issues can impact people’s lives. That’s why I believe in creating an alternative that puts the needs of hardworking individuals and businesses first.
My mission is to see everyone financially included and treated with the same respect and dignity, regardless of their financial status. I find immense joy in putting money back into the pockets of those who work hard every day to make a living instead of losing it to fees. I want to see every country thrive financially, and we can make that happen together.
As a bootstrapped founder, I’ve invested my life savings in this mission and have no regrets. Pursuing this goal and working towards a better future for all brings me joy and defines my life purpose. I’m committed to making a positive impact and hope to inspire others to do the same.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I pursued my education in Science and Technology in India. I migrated to the US when I was young and gained great experience working in Fintech and payments.
I am incredibly proud of my first accomplishment of raising my son as a single mom. He has grown up to be a responsible, compassionate, and loving person.
I am incredibly fortunate to have gained valuable industry experience developing innovative products for renowned companies such as Intercontinental Exchange NYSE, Bakkt, BitPay, and others. I am proud to have multiple patents for building digital asset custody platforms and other payment products.
These experiences have made me strong and empathetic and inspired me to keep pushing boundaries and creating innovative solutions.
Why did you decide to work on this problem, opportunity, or idea?
As a migrant, I had to pay exorbitant fees and had poor experiences with the slowness and opaqueness of sending money to my mom. Hence, the focus was always on solving this problem.
My work experience involved managing risk and settlement at Intercontinental Exchange NYSE, BitPay, and other companies where international funds settled in T+2 to T+5 days.
Millions of businesses, employees, contractors, gig-workers, and families receive money from abroad. Simplifying this for banks, businesses, and people is why I started Instarails.
Instarails offers an alternative solution for cross-border payments. We provide a network that makes payments instant, inexpensive, and inclusive to everyone, especially those in low-middle-income countries.
We have developed Instarails as a B2B SaaS company to address the root of the problem. If every bank and business adopts the Instarails network, we can collectively contribute towards improving the global economy and providing financial inclusion. We can return the billions of dollars charged in fees to these hardworking businesses and people who deserve it.
We are thrilled to announce the launch of our platform in February 2024! Our clients can send B2B, B2C, and C2C payments via bank accounts, mobile wallets, or cash pickup in over 75 countries and 50 currencies. Our clients include banks, businesses, e-commerce marketplaces, and mobile app companies.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Passion: Find your passion. It won’t feel like a job! Once I found my passion in my career, I enjoyed my work, and it never felt like a job.
Optimism: My second most significant quality is being optimistic. No matter what challenges life throws my way, I view them as experiences that make me a stronger person. I am grateful for my life and career’s good and bad experiences.
Dedication: My dedication to work has helped me to develop excellent knowledge and expertise. While at work, I completed my assigned tasks and took on additional responsibilities. I was never afraid to learn new technologies or domains and actively pursued research and learning opportunities to enhance my knowledge. As a result, I have gained much valuable knowledge and experience throughout my career.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am seeking businesses in the United States that can benefit from instant, inexpensive, and inclusive cross-border payment solutions. Our platform enables companies to make payouts via bank accounts, e-wallets, or cash, all through a single platform.
If you are a small business, we offer a web portal for sending payments, and there is no need for integration.
On the other hand, if you are an enterprise business, I would love to collaborate with you in a pilot program. I am confident that you won’t look back once you try our platform.
