Meet Yasmine Creese-Brown

We recently connected with Yasmine Creese-Brown and have shared our conversation below.

Yasmine, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
As the founder of Grlpire and Project Board Game, I draw my resilience from multiple sources. Firstly, my strong faith provides me with a deep sense of purpose and belief in the work I’m doing. It gives me the strength to persevere through challenges and setbacks, knowing that I am working towards something meaningful.

Consistency is another key aspect of my resilience. I understand the importance of staying committed to my goals and consistently putting in the effort required to achieve them. Even when faced with obstacles or setbacks, I remain steadfast in my determination, adapting and finding alternative solutions when necessary.

One of my strengths is my ability to work effectively with others. I recognize the value of collaboration and surround myself with talented individuals who share my vision. By fostering a supportive and collaborative environment, we are able to overcome obstacles together and leverage our collective strengths.

However, I am also comfortable working alone when needed. I recognize the importance of solitude and self-reflection in maintaining my resilience. It allows me to recharge, gain clarity, and focus on my goals. Whether I’m collaborating with others or working independently, I adapt to the situation and draw strength from both modes of working.

I approach each day with a mindset of taking baby steps while keeping my eyes on the prize. I understand that long-term success is built through consistent effort and progress, and I break down big goals into smaller, achievable tasks. This approach helps me stay motivated and resilient, as I celebrate small victories along the way and stay focused on the ultimate objective.

Above all, I feel a deep passion for what I am doing. It drives me to continuously learn, grow, and improve, ensuring that I remain dedicated to my work even during challenging times.

In summary, my resilience stems from my strong faith, consistency, ability to work with others, comfort in working alone, taking each day as a baby step, and above all, my unwavering passion for what I am doing. These factors collectively fuel my determination, enabling me to navigate through obstacles and achieve success in my ventures.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Yasmine Creese-Brown, founder of Grlpire.

Grlpire creates sci-fi comic books, with our first distribution release being “Bull Pin University, Extended Edition.” Our comic book series delves into dystopian science fiction, highlighting captivating stories and vibrant artwork that transports readers to imaginative worlds, most of which, you can consider to be social commentary.

Bull Pin University is about seven girls who find themselves in a dystopian society in the early 3000s in a world where women’s rights and education have been altered.

While writing Bull Pin University we carefully created each initial character to be inspired by STEAM majors. The “A” in STEAM, representing Arts, inevitably became two separate characters, Isabel (communications), and Imon (social justice). Hence the inspiration of STEAMS. The additional “S” represents Social Studies, which encompasses fields such as Civics, Political Science, and Anthropology. By promoting Social Studies as an essential field of study, we hope to inspire the development of future anthropologists, historians, policymakers, and other professionals who can contribute to positive societal change.

I invite readers, specifically comic book or dystopian novel lovers, to explore our products online at Grlpire.com.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Although I love writing for Grlpire, I wouldn’t consider writing my career.

I’ve spent almost 7 years as a Career Development Advisor at Sponsors For Educational Opportunity. Outside of writing for Grlpire and working at SEO, I also create educational board games. I consider myself to be very passionate about education and lucky to have found a way to explore education from different pockets within the field.

I’d say the most important skills that have been impactful in my journey include writing, feedback, and creativity. Although I may not be the best speller (full disclosure, spelling is not my strong point), I can observe, listen, and give critical feedback through effective (one-on-one) communication. I think this skill set also shows in my writing.

While writing Bull Pin University, I had important conversations with people about what’s going on in the world, which allowed us to make very reasonably deduced and clear perspectives of possible outcomes that we outlined in the comic books. I think being able to demonstrate an ability to employ creative writing on heavy topics like reproductive rights demonstrates how these three skills impacted my journey.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
When we first launched Bull Pin University, I expected the ideal readers to be young adults or teenagers. The more feedback we receive, the more I realize that BPU appeals to all genders 18-65 years old. Moreover, the spin-off board game for Bull Pin Unviersity, STEAMS Trivia game, is designed for ages 10+ (although the comic book is for ages 14+). Ideal players would be those who love to explore and learn new things. They should be multiplayer tabletop enthusiasts. While the game is educational, it’s also competitive. Ideal players should have a competitive streak and enjoy the thrill of a trivia battle. Trivia games often require patience and persistence, especially when tackling challenging questions.

In summary, the ideal player for STEAMS Trivia Game is a curious, social, and age-appropriate individual who enjoys learning, problem-solving, competition, and board games. They should be open to diverse knowledge levels and have a desire to engage in a fun and educational gaming experience with others.
