Meet Yelpy

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yelpy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Yelpy, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
I’m not sure I’d call it optimism exactly, maybe more an indifference in regards to other people’s opinions. At some stage, especially as a musician, you realize that something one person might love another might hate. So no matter what you create there will, more often than not, be people that love it, people that hate it and people who are completely indifferent about it. And that’s something I actually love about music. I find it freeing. When I write a new song and send it out to friends and family I always find the feedback fascinating. I’ll have one friend tell me “this is your best song yet” while another might say ‘oh I prefer your last song”. It makes you realize you need to just make the music you want to make and not really worry about being the best or doing the best. You just need to let it all go, all your insecurities and ego and accept you can’t control any of it. Accept that people will have opinions, it’s all subjective and it shouldn’t discourage or inhibit you. I think once you make peace with that then no matter what happens you can go through life with a smile on your face and your own personal forcefield that can’t be penetrated by negativity.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hi all I’m Irish singer/songwriter Yelpy from Dublin, Ireland. I write and perform my own music and am currently based in the LA area. I started playing music after my dad bought me my first guitar on my 15th birthday and I’ve not stopped playing ever since.

I’ve just released my new single “Gravity” alongside a very ambitious music video which I’m super proud and excited about. Directed by award winning director Jonathan Martin, featuring set/costume design by the amazing Clark Schaffer (Iron Man, Batman, Star Trek) & Troy Larson and with sound design by the legendary Patrick Hogan (Daredevil, The Punisher, Reservation Dogs, Cobra Kai, The Umbrella Academy) Gravity was shot in Salt Lake City, Utah with special effects work provided by Manchester, UK based Tempered Pixel Studios.

The video features myself and the beautiful & talented actress Ieva Georges (Criminal Minds, Active Shooter, Chavez Cage Of Glory) and tells the story of a space trucker who floats through the empty surroundings of space, orbiting a distant planet, as his thoughts linger on a lost love, a woman inside the ship the two had crewed together.

The song itself was written by TheRealJonSmith, Elyssa James and I, and produced at Native South Studios with additional vocals by special guest artist Allie McDonald.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Hummm for me I’d say the three thing have been:

Passion: I have always loved playing and writing music since I was a kid. I grew up in a musical household and learned to play guitar at the age of 15. Music is my passion and my way of expressing myself. I never gave up on my dreams, even when I faced challenges and obstacles along the way.

Persistence: I have been in the music industry for over two decades, starting from my first band Whover in Dublin to my solo career as Yelpy in LA. I have released several albums, singles, and music videos, and performed in various venues and events. I have also faced rejections, criticisms, and failures, but I never let them stop me from pursuing my passion. I always try to learn from the feedback I get and keep on keeping on.

Adaptability: I have moved from Ireland to the US, and adapted to different cultures, markets, and audiences. I have also experimented with different genres, styles, and sounds, and collaborated with other artists and producers. I have always been open to new opportunities and challenges, and willing to grow and evolve as an artist.

My advice for folks who are early in their journey would be to follow your heart. Do what you love and love what you do. Don’t let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do, or what you should or shouldn’t be. Be yourself and be authentic. Find your voice and your niche, and share your story and your message with the world. It takes a lot of time, effort, and dedication. You have to practice, learn, and improve your skills and knowledge. You have to network, promote, and market yourself and your work. You have to deal with criticism and rejection. You have to overcome your fears, doubts, and insecurities. But don’t give up. Keep going and keep growing. Also learn to be flexible. The music industry is constantly changing and evolving. You have to be aware of the trends, demands, and opportunities. You have to be willing to try new things, experiment, and innovate. You have to be able to adjust, adapt, and reinvent yourself. But don’t lose your identity, your vision, or your values. Stay true to yourself and your art.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The most important people in my life are my friends and family… My family have always supported me, encouraged me, and believed in me. They have given me the love, the confidence, and the motivation to pursue my passion and my dreams. They have also taught me the values of hard work, honesty, and kindness. My friends have always been there for me, through the good and the bad times. They have shared my joys, my sorrows, and my adventures. They have also inspired me, challenged me, and helped me grow as a person and as an artist.

My advice for folks who are early in their journey would be to appreciate your supporters. Be grateful for the people who help you, support you, and care for you. They are your biggest assets and your strongest allies. Show them your love, your respect, and your appreciation. Don’t take them for granted or let them down. Surround yourself with positive people. Seek out the people who inspire you, motivate you, and uplift you. They are your role models, your mentors, and your friends. Learn from them, collaborate with them, and have fun with them. Avoid the people who discourage you and/or criticize you. Find your tribe. Connect with the people who share your passion, your vision, and your love. They will help you grow, improve, and succeed.
