We were lucky to catch up with Yvette Amakor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yvette , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic from my mom! I don’t come from wealth, I had to watch my mom work 24/7 round the clock no matter the circumstances. Come rain come sun. She always found a way! I work like a beast, I am literally unstoppable when I get in my zone.. and that came part from watching her. When you are not privileged enough to have things handed to you, you do everything possible to create your own opportunities. Especially if you don’t want to end up having nothing. I want to be successful so I stay hungry and consistent with work.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a real estate specialist In Houston Texas. real estate has been an incredibly fulfilling journey for me. The dynamic nature of the industry, the constant market fluctuations, and the opportunity to connect with diverse clients have all contributed to the excitement that fuels my passion. Every day presents new challenges, and I thrive on finding innovative solutions that exceed my clients’ expectations.
Whether it’s helping a first-time homebuyer find their dream house, negotiating successful deals for my clients, or analyzing market trends to provide valuable insights, my job keeps me engaged and motivated. The thrill of closing a sale and witnessing the joy on my clients’ faces is an unparalleled feeling that reinforces my love for what I do.
Being a full time real estate agent, I have honed my skills in specific areas, such as market analysis, customer relations, contract negotiations and so much more. These experiences have further solidified my passion for the industry and equipped me with the knowledge and expertise to excel in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When reflecting on my journey as a real estate agent, I believe that three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge have had the most significant impact on my success. Here are my thoughts on those key aspects and the advice I would give to those who are early in their own real estate journeys:
Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Effective communication is vital in the real estate industry, where building relationships and understanding clients’ needs are essential. Being able to listen actively, articulate ideas clearly, and establish rapport with clients and colleagues can make a world of difference. My advice for those starting out is to focus on honing their communication and interpersonal skills. Seek opportunities to practice active listening, develop empathy, and learn how to effectively convey information in a clear and concise manner. Engaging in role-playing exercises, attending communication workshops, and seeking mentorship from experienced professionals can all help in developing and improving these skills.
Market Knowledge and Research: Real estate is a dynamic industry, and staying updated on market trends, regulations, and local knowledge is crucial. Investing time and effort in developing a deep understanding of the real estate market will enhance your credibility and enable you to provide valuable insights to clients. For those early in their journey, I recommend immersing themselves in market research. Stay informed about the latest industry news, follow trends, study property values and market fluctuations, and learn about the local community. Utilize available resources such as industry publications, online databases, and networking events to expand your knowledge base.
Adaptability and Problem-Solving: The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and find innovative solutions is crucial in real estate. Each transaction and client presents unique challenges, and being able to think critically and problem-solve effectively can set you apart. My advice for those starting out is to embrace a growth mindset and be open to learning from each experience. Seek out diverse opportunities, work on projects that stretch your abilities, and be willing to step out of your comfort zone. Collaborate with experienced professionals, leverage their expertise, and continuously seek feedback to improve your problem-solving skills. Embracing new technologies and staying updated on industry trends can also help you adapt to the evolving real estate landscape.
In summary, the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey as a real estate agent are effective communication and interpersonal skills, comprehensive market knowledge, and adaptability/problem-solving abilities. For those early in their real estate careers, my advice is to focus on developing and improving these areas. With practice, dedication, and a commitment to lifelong learning, you can build a strong foundation for success in this exciting industry.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Feeling overwhelmed is a common experience especially as a real estate agent where you have to take care with different clients needs and also have to do your administrative duties like sending out lists, follow ups, prospecting and more, it is important to have strategies in place to manage those moments effectively. a few suggestions of what I do when I feel Overwhelmed that might be helpful to you:
Take a Step Back: When overwhelmed, it can be helpful to pause and take a step back from the situation. Find a quiet space where you can have a few moments alone to gather your thoughts. Deep breathing exercises or meditation techniques can also assist in calming your mind and reducing stress.
Prioritize and Organize: Take a moment to assess the tasks or responsibilities that are causing the overwhelm. Create a list or use a task management tool to prioritize your workload. Identify the most critical or time-sensitive items and break them down into smaller, manageable tasks. This way, you can tackle them one at a time, focusing on what needs immediate attention.
Delegate or Seek Support: If possible, delegate tasks or seek support from colleagues, friends, or family members. Reach out to your support network and communicate your feelings of overwhelm. They may be able to offer assistance, guidance, or simply lend a listening ear. Remember, you don’t have to handle everything on your own.
Practice Self-Care: Engaging in self-care activities can help alleviate feelings of overwhelm. Take breaks throughout the day to do something you enjoy, such as going for a walk, listening to music, reading a book, or practicing a hobby. Engaging in activities that help you relax and recharge can provide a fresh perspective and renewed energy to tackle your responsibilities.
Break Tasks into Smaller Steps: If a particular task feels daunting, break it down into smaller, more manageable steps. By focusing on one step at a time, you can make progress without feeling overwhelmed by the entire task. Celebrate each small accomplishment along the way, as it will provide motivation to keep moving forward.
Practice Time Management: Evaluate how you are managing your time and consider if any adjustments can be made. Identify tasks that can be eliminated, delegated, or postponed.
Additionally, try implementing time management techniques, where you work in focused bursts with short breaks in between, I personally do this a lot to improve productivity and reduce overwhelm.
