We were lucky to catch up with Yvette Perret recently and have shared our conversation below.
Yvette, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Great question! I basically found in myself an energy to make other people feel confident. By being confident myself and showing others that personal self-esteem is infectious. Everyone needs to know that in my line of work, I see everything! We are all unique and different in our own ways and that is what makes us special. We as a community need to stop comparing ourselves to others and to what we see on social media. Once you find your confidence, the world is yours!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about business and what you’re working on?
I came into Photography after being a legal assistant for many years. Coming from a world of stress and chaos. I openly accepted the role as a photographer in my own small business. Don’t get me wrong, there are days that I get stressed and over worked. However, this type of work is my dream job. I meet new people every single day, and I am able to call the shots on what I want to do and how I want to do it. I learned long ago to stop comparing myself and my business to other photographers and their business. There is enough work especially in Houston Texas for so many of us. Everyone has their own vision, their own style and that is shown to your potential clients. I absolutely love what I do and I’m blessed that I’m able to do it.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three things that I can say, were very influential in my career would be first, knowledge. Knowledge in the type of work that I do. Learning about my camera, learning editing techniques, knowing that each client is different and to learn how to use their differences to their advantage. Second, I would say, never stop educating yourself. If there’s a new product or software that I want to know about, I will find a class or a lecture in regards to it. There is always room for growth. Third would be marketing I can honestly say that I have never stopped marketing myself and my business I spent hours when I first started out, simply putting my name out into the world until this day I spend five hours a week dedicated to marketing. I want to make sure that my potential clients know exactly who I am and what I do.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Stress can definitely play a huge role when you are a small business owner, and in my case, the only photographer at my business. I’ve learned to take my workload in strides not to feel overwhelmed when I am super busy, yet to organize my plans on what needs to be done and what needs to be done ASAP. Take a moment and just breathe. Do not put yourself in a situation that rushes your craft, set deadlines that are obtainable and be open and honest with your customers so that they know what to expect. Once you learn how to dedicate your time and efficiency, things run smoothly.
