Meet Zenobia Dyson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Zenobia Dyson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Zenobia , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Building resilience takes time. One has to grow and one has to be willing to work on themselves to be able to withstand the challenges in life. If one is able to push through their pain, through adversity then one has already developed the skill set. Possessing resilience doesn’t mean one won’t get knocked down a few times in life, its all about how one decides to bounce back after being knocked down. I believe this is where strength comes from. I gained resilience from all of my sufferings; my pain, either I was going to allow the challenges to defeat me or I was going to fight back and overcome them all! The previous road I was on, it was unhealthy because I allowed the past to consume me and beat me down. My faith and trust in God has allowed me to prevail and also my family has taught me to tap into my inner strength by encouraging me, pushing life words into me. I was like a house that burned down to completely to cinder and then I rose from the ashes to become a role model for others.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am the owner and founder of Royal Oasis Spa ~ Get Juiced Company. I am a licensed Esthetician, licensed in Maryland, District of Columbia and Virginia. I share this business with my husband, Corey Dyson, Sr who is also a Licensed Esthetician and caters to the male clientele.

An Esthetician is one who beautifies and improves the conditions of the skin. My hands are like different paint brushes. My client’s skin is the canvas; my job is to enhance the beauty of the canvas to create a Masterpiece!

My specialty is Hydrodermabrasion and scalp facials, also provide other facial treatments such as beard treatments for the male clientele. Everyone’s skin care journey is different so we also provide organic treatments to reduce the exposure of chemicals which mean better skin health.

What is special about this field of Esthetics, one is contributing to the self-worth and confidence of the client. Its a rewarding experience emotionally, it almost feel as if you are saving lives. It goes beyond the treatment of skin, its more than just skin deep! Facials are a remedy to the soul; those facial massages alters the client’s mood, relieves stress and are a temporarily psychological relaxation. This positively impacts the mental health.

Royal Oasis Spa believes in the total mind, body and spirit! This is our pathway to provide a giveback to other skin care professionals and clients by providing free educational tidbits via our YouTube Channel @zenobiadyson3175. We are preparing to launch an educational platform to keep licensed Professionals educated and updated on modern technology and practices.

Get Juiced Company is four (4) years young, this is our first baby; being the forerunner of the skincare business. Get Juiced is a homemade organic skin and scalp care product line. We want to build a memorable brand that stands out from the masses. We have formulated our very own Envy whipped body and hair moisturizer, Nobility P.S.C. hair system which consists of Aloe Vera Pre-Poo hair and scalp treatment, Aloe Vera shampoo and Greek Yogurt hair conditioner. We have created Noblemen Beard Balm & Beard Tonic and our latest Emerge scalp oil. We wanted to take the power into our own hands and create products that are natural without the harmful preservatives.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As an esthetician embarks in their exhilarating journey through the realm of esthetics, there are many disciplines that reside within the overarching field of esthetics. An esthetician should begin with the research of their school, courses, and curriculum in the field. Education has to be a core focus! Education will be continuous if you want to stay up on the latest trends, increase your expertise and continue to practice what you learn. The esthetics schools do not teach you everything you need to know in the field. It is all about the hours and passing your state board tests in school. In order to survive in this field, one must adapt to the changing trends to be able to offer unparalleled services in the industry. Learning how to manage your time throughout your research and educational training is key! As an esthetician or aspiring esthetician, you cannot just see yourself as an esthetician, you have to see yourself as a detective because the skin holds a story, Your mag lamp is your spy glass to decode those mysteries under the skin’s surface. Then you are a forensic expert to be able to transform the skin by navigating through the plethora of products to customize a solution to solve the case. One has to be confident in their findings and solutions.

Long before we went to esthetics school to gain qualifying hours to gain a license, we had taken self-paced online courses to prepare ourselves for entering the world of learn skin. I wanted to shape myself for the journey of discovery and also embrace the continuing education, equipping myself to have an eye to discern that separates facts from fluff.

The first day of class, the director said “if you want it, you gotta show up!” it reminded me of the Beatles song “Come and Get It” the lyrics says “If you want it, Here it is. Come and get it, Make your mind up fast.” And it just made sense! That was a strong statement and one has to have strong determination because inner strength will support the goal. There is no magic recipe behind a successful life or successful business unless you put that work in.

My husband and I traveled the furthest distance out of all the students and at that moment we had to be all in! There were students that showed up but didn’t show up, if you know what I mean. We had to be pro-active, persistent, and be prepared for class and the challenges to come.
My advice to those who are early in their journey is do not allow people to deter you from fulfilling your dreams! One has to surround themselves with like minded individuals. There is nothing in life that can stop you from reaching your destination except yourself! My last advice would be network, network, network as much as you can!! Don’t be shy, put the pride to the side and get out there and meet new people and learn new things.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Since the age of sixteen (16) years young cosmetology and esthetics was a dream I wanted to fulfill. At the time I attended Blades Academy in Great Mills, MD for their cosmetology program through high school, I had to terminate my enrollment due to not having a babysitter for the afternoon classes. I never thought this dream would be fulfilled because I had 3 more children since then. After completing my Associate’s degree, Bachelors degree, and certification course I pretty much was done with school until that tug pulled on my heart strings once again…..esthetics. All of my children graduated high school and college. I had more year before my last child would leave home for college so I thought to myself, let me get this license so I can focus on my son leaving for college.

During this moment in my life, my family supported my decision to go back to school once again. My husband, Corey said “I will take the class with you”. I don’t know if he knew all that was going to be involved but he stuck it out with me. Traveling 1hr and 30mins both ways four (4) days a week with a full-time job and being a full-time mom and wife was hectic! There was a time my husband and I drove separately and I got into a car accident on the beltway. I was hurting pretty bad but I still drove to class. I called my husband and my children and they all were so concerned. I pushed it out like a Champ and went to the Emergency Room afterwards. Then months later my husband was admitted to the hospital for chest pain. When he was released, he also went to class the same day of his release. It was the grace and mercy of God that allowed us to endure the challenges and not break! Our children held down the fort, cooked dinner, helped us with our review tests, allowed us to use them as models, they pushed out our content on social media daily trying to promote us. The children sold our products, purchased our products and still today they use our products faithfully! We all learned from each other, we backed each other up, and we took the time to learn because it was a passion of mine that I could not let go!

I would say its because of my lord, Jesus Christ I serve and my family that helped me in this journey; this journey is still being written. God was with me/us then and with me/us even now. I give God all the honor, all the glory and all the praise for giving me the drive, the determination and the resilience to carry on but most of all giving me a beautiful family to push me all the way to the finish line!
