Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Zoe Carlin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Zoe, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
So, to be honest, growing up, I was extremely unconfident. I faced bullying and resentment from the other kids at school which caused my insecurities and self esteem issues. Later down the road, I realized that there is nothing to be ashamed of if you have different features than other people. In life, some people are bitter and not very kind, but that is a different kind of self esteem issue. I became truly my best, authentic self when I stopped caring what others thought about me and focused on my future.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a singer/songwriter based out of Los Angeles, CA, while attending college full time pursuing a bachelors degree in psychology. Ever since I can remember, I have always found singing as one of my greatest passions. Though, at the age of 13, I started writing my own pieces; some of which are completely awful and will never be revealed to the public. Now as a 20 year old, I have multiple songs released on various music platforms. Make sure to check out my recent album called “A Glimpse of My Rotten Past” released on December 15th. 2023. The sole reason I became interested in making my own music and speaking my own words is that mainstream music growing up did not have a significant impact on me. I always thought that these pieces, even as good as some of them are, lacked the authentic real life experiences shared through song. I craved the feeling of listening to a song and thinking how relatable the sound, lyrics, and melody is. My goal is to see my audience listen to one of my tunes and get goosebumps, while another makes them want to dance on their countertop.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe that the three skills that were the most important during my journey are self awareness, exposure and motivation. In order to write my songs, being self aware is very key. In order to write songs about trauma and depression, I strive to be educated about traumas and depression. In line with that, having exposure to brilliant artists and talent is principle for becoming inspired! I love to spend my free time searching for not very well known, yet indescribably amazing musicians. This is where the motivation appears. With these two skills, my mind is at work and I have the drive to write and create my music.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
When I have alone time, I am able to slowly yet surely overcome any challenge. If I have been triggered in any way by something happening, I have learned that walking away and taking some time to internally evaluate what just happened and how to fix it is a very valuable skill. I also realized that some people honestly are just looking for fights, and get pleasure from making someone in a more vulnerable position get just as crazy back. On another note, I also can be more productive when I am alone too, since I have no distractions. I am able to be my most creative when I am not around others.
