We’re looking forward to introducing you to Pamela Patrick White. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Pamela, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I have always enjoyed gardening but back in 2020 I took mine to anew level. I grew fruits, vegetables and berries to eat and started using them in paintings.Flowers and birds, frogs and butterflies were added until I decided that these paintings might be just the thing to encourage other people to garden too. With the help of my husband we created and now sell a garden planning book called My Garden Diary.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
While I spent the first half of my career as a book illustrator, I consider myself an historic painter. The majority of my oil paintings depict 18th century American history, French and Indian War, Colonial America, and the American Revolutionary War. As with every artist I have slowly evolved to add material culture , still life paintings using eighteenth century pottery and tinware and the natural world and my favorite, painting horses.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My father taught me to work with purpose and to stay focused on my goals. In his quiet intelligent way he showed me that with patience and thought you can make your way through life successfully on your own path and in your own way.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Just as many people I know, I was diagnosed with cancer not too long ago. Mine was at a level that I had to be prepared to fight for the rest of my life. But every once in a while life hands you a one in a million gift and with medical help I was healed. This two year experience gave me time I did not think I had and now I find myself painting more of what I love and sharing my knowledge with young artists who are trying to find their way in the arts.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
My circle of friends and artists are mostly historically minded such as myself. I have found these people who are focused on history are some of the most grounded good to be around folks I know. Our focus on history comes first and we help each other learn what is needed to complete our individual artistic creations. These are painters, sculptors, knife and horn makers, wood workers, potters and many more all creating art that reflects our history.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people understand the underlying sense of caring in my work . To care about those that came before us in history is to show respect for what they sacrificed. To care about nature is to be aware of how we interact with the plants and animals around us -we are not the only ones here.
