Practicing Empathy In the Workplace with GW Branding Group

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Anthony Galizia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Anthony, so excited to have you with us today and we are really interested in hearing your thoughts about how folks can develop their empathy? In our experience, most folks want to be empathetic towards others, but in a world where we are often only surrounded by people who are very similar to us, it can sometimes be a challenge to develop empathy for others who might not be as similar to us. Any thoughts or advice?
Thank you for allowing me to speak on this topic! There are a few main conditions that come to mind when asking what allowed me to develop empathy. It has been a combination of experiences and opportunities throughout my life. Growing up, I was always told to put myself in other people’s shoes. My family taught me the importance of listening to others and trying to see things from their perspective. This laid the foundation for me to be more empathetic and understanding throughout both my personal and business relationships.

As a co-founder of the GW Branding Group, I’ve made it a priority to lead by example and embrace empathy in our work culture. For me, empathy means taking the time to listen and understand where someone else is coming from, their past experiences, and their perspective. It’s about showing kindness and caring for one another, even in challenging situations. We believe that by prioritizing empathy in our company culture, we can create a more supportive and collaborative workplace culture. Donny and I want those we work with to feel valued and supported. Empathy is the key to achieving this. By leading by example, I hope to encourage others to practice empathy in their interactions with one another.

I believe that empathy is a crucial skill that can be developed and honed over time. Empathy is emotional intelligence. What led me to realize the importance of empathy was actually the lack thereof in my past work environments. Empathy is crucial for training and development as it plays a crucial role in motivating your team. You can build a stronger relationship with your team which leads to a better understanding of their personal motivators. Not everyone has had the same experience, and not everyone is working toward the same goal. I am proud to be a part of a company culture that prioritizes empathy and kindness, and I believe that it has contributed to our success as a business.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Our guests on Off The Ground come from a wide range of industries and backgrounds, and we ask them a variety of questions to uncover the unique aspects of their stories. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, I can confidently say that the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were perseverance, adaptability, and always having a growth mindset. Without these, I would not be where I am today.

Perseverance has been crucial in helping me overcome challenges and obstacles that I encountered on my journey. The ability to persist and keep going, even when the going gets tough, has been instrumental in helping me achieve my goals. Perseverance is about overcoming your challenges and being consistent in what you do. Motivation will come and go but your ability to do what needs to be done without having motivation is where the difference is made.

Adaptability is another critical quality that has helped me navigate through changes and uncertainties in my journey. Being able to adapt to new situations, learn from them, and adjust my approach accordingly has allowed me to stay resilient and thrive in different environments. I value adaptability because in the marketing industry, things are constantly changing from new tech to new strategies, and you have to adapt to the times. We are seeing this play out now with AI. Adapting quickly to emerging trends allows you to stay ahead of the curve.

Lastly, having a growth mindset has been transformative in my journey. This mindset has allowed me to view challenges and setbacks as opportunities for growth and development. It has encouraged me to seek out knowledge, skills, experiences, and to embrace continuous learning. I do not know everything, but I can find the answer! Sometimes you have to take a step back and start to look at things from a different view. Think long-term.

For folks who are early in their journey, my advice would be to focus on developing and improving these qualities. Perseverance, adaptability, and a growth mindset can be developed through deliberate practice and consistent effort. Here are a few tips to get started:

  • Practice perseverance by setting small, achievable goals and gradually building up to more significant challenges.

  • Cultivate adaptability by stepping outside of your comfort zone and trying new things. Stay up to date with current trends in your industry. Test them out. If they work better, adapt.

  • Foster a growth mindset by embracing failure as a necessary part of the learning process and seeking out feedback and opportunities for growth.

Remember, your journey is unique, and your path to success may look different from others. But with perseverance, adaptability, and a growth mindset, you can overcome challenges, achieve your goals, and thrive in whatever you choose to do.
