Precious Perez shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Precious, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something outside of work that is bringing me joy right now is my cat, Tomas Lowe.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Precious Perez, and I am a blind Puerto Rican music artist, actress, author, educator, and disability advocate.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was a painfully shy child afraid to speak up, I believed my voice would always be soft and timid, but I realize now that this was only true until I found my voice.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, I would tell her to keep going. You are stronger than you know, more powerful than you feel, and worthy just by being authentically yourself. Lean on your village, stay humble, and don’t harden your heart. You are exactly where you are supposed to be, and God’s plan is greater than you can imagine
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is the real me without the private details of my personal life and every day happenings on display. I strive to spread the same love and light both in public and in private.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope the story people tell about me when I’m gone is that I was a strong, determined, and loving person who uplifted her communities and her people every chance I got. I hope they tell the world that I used my art for good, and that my faith was unshakeable. I hope they say I lived a full life and became the change I wanted to see, that I left the world better than I found it.
