We recently had the chance to connect with Rachel Sutherland and have shared our conversation below.
Rachel, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
As well as a small business owner I have had a career in the Fashion Industry for the last 15 years. Monday through Friday I spend my day as a technical designer for swimwear. I collaborate with other designers and factories overseas advising on construction and fitting on fit models. I find it very creative and fulfilling.
I come home to my kitties and try and be productive with my business Pressed Vibrations. Whether that be my social media, photography, drawing designs or working on a new projects.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I am Rachel Sutherland, a floral designer and founder of Pressed Vibrations. I forage and purchase real flowers and foliage and press them individually to assemble for the art pieces.
I make frames, shadows boxes, stationary and DIY Flower Art Kits. The DIY kits are a new addition to my line. People are really loving them, and they make great gifts. They get a chance to make their own flower art or have their friends over for an art day.
Next year I am working on teaching classes from my DIY kits. One of my goals is to do a flower art and wine class. I know people would really enjoy that.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My mother has always been a big inspiration to me; always lifting me up and encouraging to try different things. Growing up she motivated to go out into the world with an open mind trying new outlets with confidence. I always felt I had the resources at every turn. I almost always landed on self expression through writing, theatre, art and music.
I am so grateful for these experiences, they helped shape me for the person I am today. We were always having fun trying new things and she is such a positive person in my life.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, many times with my company, Pressed Vibrations. I think when you start something and don’t see results right away you get frustrated. But, there is always an ebb and flow and I’ve learned to be more patient and adaptable. Throughout the years I have sold at stores, vendor events, and online trying to get a feel for which option worked best for me, and that has been a lot of work. Juggling a full time career, life’s schedule, along with all that can be very fulfilling yet exhausting. It is worth though because I’ve learned so much and meet some great people.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If immortality were real, what would you build?
I’ve always dreamed of building an artist community where people can come and do art. So, for instance if you love drawing then drafting tables and tools, easels for paintings, music rooms you can book to do recordings, tea/coffee and more! A total no -judgement zone where you can meet like minded individuals who you can collaborate with or just escape the house and get creative.
